This report covers countries that range from major drug producing and drug-transit countries, where drug control is a critical element of national policy, to small countries or entities where drug issues or the capacity to deal with them are minimal. Provides city-level analyses on a wide range of urban issues including environment, society, economics, and systems of governance.

Includes information on the purpose and activities of the World Bank and affiliated groups.  The Countries and Regions section of the site provides a range of useful information including maps and statistics.

The second section, divided by region and country, describes conditions for different groups of refugees and includes statistics.

Library Catalog and Database Searching Tips

An extremely useful series of books on a select list of countries is published by the Library of Congress.  Search the Pace Library Catalog under keyword for COUNTRY STUDY plus NAME OF THE COUNTRY (for example: COUNTRY STUDY AFGHANISTAN) to find the call number of a country study.  These in-depth studies include a vast array of topics as well as different kinds of maps.  Available on the web: Country Studies: Area Handbook Series (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/). 

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development puts out another useful series of studies on countries.  Search the Business Source Premier Database for OECD Economic Surveys plus NAME OF THE COUNTRY (for example OECD ECONOMIC SURVEYS TURKEY).  These books include a discussion of recent economic trends, economic policies, short-term projections and the effects of government policies on industrial development.  These descriptions are supported by tables which contain extensive economic data including the external and internal debt, lending rates, gross fixed investment by sector, manufacturing, inflation, standard of living, agriculture and foreign direct investment.

There is a series of “DOING BUSINESS IN…” handbooks published by Price Waterhouse and Ernst & Young.  Search the Pace Library catalog under keyword for DOING BUSINESS plus NAME OF THE COUNTRY (for example: DOING BUSINESS AUSTRALIA) to find the call number of one of these handbooks.  They have brief comments on laws, the business climate and some statistics.  Also available on the Ernst & Young website: (www.ey.com/global/gcr.nsf/EYPassport/EYPassport_Home)

Covers fifty-one countries.  Provides background information on the Commonwealth followed by country listings including information on the economy, exports, history, population, education and names of government officials.

Each report contains information arranged in 24 categories including land and climate, language, religion, diet, holidays, government, economy, health.  Entries include maps and contact information.
Encyclopedia of World Cities.  (Ref HT108.5 .W47 1999)
Examines ten key areas of life in 132 of the world’s leading cities including: location, population, history, economy, transportation, health care, and housing.  Entries are arranged alphabetically.  Includes maps.  Also includes tables of comparative rankings, a bibliography and an index.
The Europa World Year Book.  (Ref JN1 .E85)
Provides comprehensive information on more than 1650 international organizations.  Chapters on countries are arranged alphabetically and provide detailed coverage of: recent history, economics, social issues, politics, demographics, media, transportation, and religion.
International Yearbook and Statesman’s Who’s Who.  (Ref JA51 .I57)
Covers more than 200 national and international organizations.  Chapters on 370 countries include information on politics, economic structure, demographics, media, and legal system.  Also contains biographies of over 7,000 prominent people.
Statesman’s Year-Book.  (Ref Desk JA51 .S7)

This is a comprehensive compendium of comparable data useful for the analysis of socio-economic development on the world, regional and national levels.  Provides statistics on economic structure, trends and performance, population and social statistics, and international economic relations.  Updated by the Monthly Bulletin of Statistics, which is located in Birnbaun Periodicals.
Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations.  (Ref G63 .W67)
Describes in detail the UN, countries of the world, and their leaders. Volume 1 covers the structure, history, and purposes of the UN, including detailed analyses of its committees, offices, and issues. Volumes 2-5 are arranged by geographical area. And use 50 categories to describe the history, economy, politics, and social progress for each of 194 countries. Volume 6, "World Leaders," provides a biographical profile for the person who heads each nation's government.
Yearbook of the United Nations.  (Ref JX1977.A37 Y4 2001)
Provides comprehensive coverage of the activities of the United Nations during the year.  Arranged in 6 parts: political and social questions, human rights, economic and social questions, legal questions, institutional, administrative and budgetary questions, intergovernmental organizations related to the United Nations.  Includes Appendices and an index.

Countries are arranged within four geographic regions: Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific and the Americas.  Provides ethnic profiles that include the group’s history, population, social status, and relations with other ethnic groups within the country.  Includes a bibliography and index.
Minahan, James.  Nations without States: A Historical Dictionary of Contemporary National Movements.  (Ref D860 .M56 1996)

This site presents an economic portrait of 161 countries.  Ten categories of economic freedom factors are analyzed and scored, and countries are rated on the basis of economic freedom and government intervention.  Comparisons between countries and regions, and across time are possible.  The index can be sorted by any of the ten factors or by the overall score.

The World’s Emerging Stock Markets: Structure, Developments, Regulations and Opportunities.  (Ref HG4551 .W675 1993)
Covering Asia, Latin America and a few European and Middle Eastern countries each country essay is an overview of the market including history, structure, and brief profiles of major listed companies.  Part three consists of chapters on investment strategies that may cast further light on specific markets.  Appendices at the end include price indices and performance data in local and/or U.S. dollars.  There are also fact sheets on country funds and a directory of the stock exchanges.

Detailed summaries of the laws of many countries as well as the individual provinces of Canada.  Use the table of contents at the beginning of each country to look up the subject area.  A section at the rear includes the full text of selected international conventions to which the United States is a party.

Demographic Yearbook.  (Ref HA17 .D45)
A comprehensive compilation of demographic statistics on a range of topics such as: population, natality, foetal mortality, general mortality, marriages and divorces.
National Population Policies.  (Ref HB871 .N33 1998)
Provides an overview of population policies for each of the U.N. member states and for selected non-member states.  The second half of the book presents tables that illustrate government views and policies from 1976-1996 on population growth, fertility and family planning, and international migration and spatial distribution.
Ness, Immanuel and James Ciment.  The Encyclopedia of Global Population and Demographics.  (Ref HB871 .N43 1999)
Arranged in 2 parts.  Part 1 includes an introduction to demography and 8 other essays on topics such as resources and environment, migration, labor and economy, migration, transportation and communications, health care and education.  Part 2 presents tables that offer a demographic profile of all the world’s sovereign states as well as a series of world data, graphs, and tables.  Includes bibliographies and an index.
International Encyclopedia of Sexuality. (Ref HQ21 .I68 1997)
Presents scholarly information about sexual beliefs and behaviors currently practiced in 32 countries.  Each essay includes current demographics and a brief history and then discusses a range of topics including religious and ethical factors, sexually transmitted diseases, and sex education.  Entries include bibliographies.  Include an index.

Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of World Religions.  (Ref BL31 .M47 1999)
Provides an introduction to a broad range of topics on living and ancient religions.  There are 3500 entries arranged alphabetically and 29 longer articles on major religions and issues.  Includes photographs, illustrations, maps and an index.
New Catholic Encyclopedia. (Ref BX841 .N44 1967)
This history of Catholicism and the Catholic Church contains an index in volume 15.

SLAVERY

The Historical Encyclopedia of World Slavery.  (HT861 .H57 1997)
Documents the institution of slavery on a global scale.  Includes illustrations, cross-references, bibliographies and an index.

TERRORISM

Encyclopedia of World Terrorism.  (Ref HV6431 .E53 2003)
Arranged in 3 volumes, this encyclopedia begins with a discussion of the history of terrorism and the background to modern terrorist campaigns.  Discussions of terrorist psychology and techniques are included as well as more detailed accounts of terrorist activities in the Middle East, Latin America and the United States.  The third volume presents information on the response to terrorism and the media and terrorism.  Includes a chronology of major terrorist events, a directory of terrorist groups and individuals.  Includes a bibliography and indexes.

Provides basic information related to external trade performance for 179 countries or reporting customs areas.  Volume 1 is arranged by trade by country, and Volume 2 is arranged by trade by commodity.

Describes government involvement in fiscal, monetary, industrial, trade and regulatory policies.  Tables with selected economic data.

Hannan, June, Mitzi Auchterlonie, and Katherine Holden.  International Encyclopedia of Women’s Suffrage.  (Ref JF851 .H28 2000)
Focuses on the international dimensions of women’s suffrage movements.  Entries are arranged alphabetically.  Countries included were selected because they had an active suffrage movement or because they provide an example of particular circumstances under which women won the vote.  Includes a bibliography, index, and an appendix which lists web resources in English on women’s suffrage.
