How to find fiction in the Pace University Library

You may think of the Pace University Library is an academic library containing items that will help you complete your research papers and other class assignments. Would it be a surprise to know that we also have a collection of children's books and that hidden within all those academic books there are many good novels to enjoy between class assignments?

To find fiction by Searching the library catalog, you can try the following searches:

Suggested Keyword searches and information on possible results that you may not want:

  • Fiction and (topic) - this search may also find criticism of the fiction
  • novel and (topic) - this search may also find a video adaptation of a novel
  • novel and fiction - this search will find items about a novel as well as novels
  • fiction and “a novel” - this search will find items that have been cataloged as “a novel”

Suggested Subject searches:

  • Fiction
  • Try a topic followed by "--Fiction" in a subject search
    • Marriage--Fiction
    • History--Fiction

You can also try an Author or Title Search on your favorite author or book title!

 

How to limit a search to one Pace University Library:

If you would like to locate only the books in one Pace University Library location, the catalog gives you several options for limiting your search results.

If you performed an Author, Title, or Subject search

  • Click on the Limit This Search button. You should then see the above screen:
  • To limit by location, select the location from the WHERE Item is located: pull down menu. You may only select one location at a time.
  • Click on the Limit/sort items using the above data button.

If you performed a Keyword search

  • Click on the Modify Search button, which will return you to the Keyword Advanced Search screen
  • Limit your search by selecting a library collection from the pull down menu next to Location.
  • Click the Search button at the bottom of the screen.

 

To find fiction by Browsing the library shelves:

The Library of Congress has designated the letter P to begin the call numbers of books in Language and Literature. The books with a call number beginning PN is designated as a Literature book. You will find all types of literature in this section including drama, poetry, prose, and quotations.

The call numbers PN 6120.15 through PN 6120.95 have been classified by the Library of Congress as Fiction. You will find many anthologies of short fiction stories in these call numbers.

*There are many good novels hidden within the other sections of the P call numbers.

 

Children and Young Adult Books:

Children and Young Adult books can be found in the Children’s Literature section of the Mortola Library. Fiction books have the call numbers J F followed by the author’s name. Biographies and other non fiction books in this section will have J F followed by a Dewey classification number and then the author’s name.

The Birnbaum Library has a special section of children's books as well. These books have the Location in the Library Catalog of Birnbaum Curriculum Center and will have Library of Congress PZ call numbers.

Authors on the Web focuses on authors of contemporary adult, young adult, and children's books. There are biographies, bibliographies, and round tables by genre where the authors discuss their impressions and motivations. Links to each author's personal web site are available and well as news articles, features, and a highlighted author of the month.

The goal of this site is to make the whole world a library. Members of this online book club / reading group "release a book into the wild" and note when and where the book was released. You can search for a city or town and see what books might be waiting for you. There are also journal entries (reviews) available.
