How to Find Film Criticism

Books | Databases | Websites

BOOKS

To find books in the catalog, start with a Keywords Search for the Title of your movie. You may also want to try a Keyword search for the type of movie (ie western) AND motion picture.

The Library of Congress Subject Headings that the catalog uses are:

  • Motion Pictures (the largest subject heading for this area)
  • Feature Films
  • Film Adaptations
  • Film Criticism or Motion Pictures Evaluation or Motion Pictures History and Criticism

DATABASES

A look at the Full text Motion Pictures Periodicals offerings through the library catalog suggests a number of databases you might want to try.

Academic Search Premier and Research Library are both general databases that contain several of the film industry publications as well as general newspapers that might have reviews.

You can also search some of our Literature databases such as MLA Bibliography (through LION), JSTOR, Project Muse, and Literature Resource Center. Remember these databases will also have information on the original written work if the movie was based on a book. You can search by movie title, actor names, director, or genre to find resources.

To find an original movie review, try the New York Times Archive database. Limit the dates to the year that the movie first played and possibly the year before for criticism and expectations for the fim opening.
