Arranged by industry or topic, this is a good starting point for finding a list of trade associations, specialized journals, statistics sources, internet sites, and databases to consult.

This service is divided by industry. Each industry booklet gives an overview of the industry, a forecast with discussion, and a list of the top companies within the industry along with ratios and other statistics for both the industry and individual companies. See specifically the booklets covering “Lodging and Gaming” and “Airlines”.

An annual travel publication covering all aspects of the industry.
Hotel and Travel Index    Ref TX907 .H6 Sum 2000
Guide to hotel policies, special programs, current discounts and package plans. Directory also includes reference to hotels that specialize in meetings, groups and incentive travel.

Advertising, Marketing & Demographics

Statistical Abstract of the United States    Ref Desk HA 202
Annual publication of the U.S. Census Bureau giving the highlights of statistics gathered on a regular basis by both government and private sources. In some cases, relevant web sites are given. A wide range of topics such as: health, population, education, crime, travel and foreign country information are covered. The Statistical Abstract is also available in an abbreviated format on the web at: http://www.census.gov/statab/www/.

Published by Competitive Media Reporting, this annual covers advertising expenditures in 10 major media. The service also covers expenditures for brands which spend $25.000 or more a year. The main section is arranged by brand/parent company. There are also tables showing rankings and advertising by product category.
Lifestyle Market Analyst    Ref HF5415.33.U6 L54 2000
This annual SRDS publication is divided into four main areas: 1. Market profiles of 210 geographic designated markets. 2. Lifestyle profiles of 75 lifestyle interests including several covering travel. 3. Consumer segment profiles arranged according to demographic characteristics such as age, income, and marital status, and 4. Consumer Magazines and Direct Marketing Lists arranged by lifestyle.

A compilation of market share tables published on an annual basis. The tables are taken from a variety of business publications. Indexes arranged by company name, brand name, product/service type, and geographic area are included.

Occupational Outlook Handbook    Ref Desk HF5381 .U62 2000/2001  
Published annually by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the handbook gives outlook, salary expectations, job descriptions, and sources of career information for various occupations. This title is also available on the Internet (http://www.bls.gov/oco/) along with its companion journal Occupational Outlook Quarterly.

Environmental Information

The Encyclopedia of the Environment    Ref GE10 .E53 1994
Produced by the Rene Dubos Center for Human Environments, this single-volume encyclopedia addressing a wide range of environmental issues including travel and tourism. Each topical essay suggests sources for further reading.
Environmental Ethics    Ref GE42 .P35 1997
Environmental issues are examined from an ethical viewpoint in this handbook which also includes a directory of organizations, a glossary, biographical sketches, and bibliographies of other resources.

This encyclopedia has standardized entries for all countries. General demographic, social, political, governmental, geographical, and business information are given for each country included. There is even a short entry on each country’s travel and tourism.
Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life    Ref GN333 .W67 1998 (vols. 1-4)
A Companion volume to the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations. This four volume set is arranged by geographic region and explores the ways of life among 500 or more culture groups. Among the issues covered are: clothing, rites of passage, living conditions, cultural heritage, and folk crafts.

You can access Pace Library databases from the library home pageClick on Databases, then use the pull down menus to select your databases.

For information on travel and tourism, try the following databases: ABI/Inform, Business and Company Resource Database,  Business Source Premier, Academic Search Premier, Research Library, Lexis-Nexis, PsycINFO (for articles on the psychological aspects of travel and for personnel psychology) and Sociological Abstracts (This is the only database which indexes the following journals:  Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing, and Leisure Studies).
