Current Awareness / Alerts

Current Awareness/Alerts are available in the following subscription databases:


ProQuest Interface:

ABI/Inform, National Newspapers, Research Library, Trade & Industry

To set up a topic search alert:

  1. Run your desired search from either the Basic or the Advanced page.
  2. On the Results page, click Set Up Alert.
  3. You will see the Set up Your Search Alert page. Complete the required information and click Save.
  4. You will see a confirmation page, summarizing your information. If the information is correct, click Done. Otherwise, you can click Delete this Alert to delete the alert.

To create a Publication Alert:

  1. Locate the desired publication using Publication search.
  2. From the Publication page, click the Set up Alert button.
  3. You will see the Set up Your Publication Alert page. Complete the required information and click Save.
  4. You will see a confirmation page, summarizing your information. If the information is correct, click Done. Otherwise, you can click Delete this Alert to delete the alert.

Ebsco Interface:

Academic Search Premier, Art Abstracts, Business Source Premier, CINAHL, ERIC, Health Source: Nursing/Academic, Medline, Professional Development Collection, PsycINFO, Regional Business News

Saving a Search as an Alert:

  1. Perform a Search. Click Search History/Alerts. Then click Save Searches/Alerts. (If you have not already logged into your personal account, you will be prompted to log in. Enter your user name and password; or register as a new user.
  2. In the Save Search History box, type in a search name and description. Select Alert in the Save Search as... box.
  3. Select how often the search will be run by making a choice from the Frequency drop-down list.
  4. Limit which articles are to be searched by making a choice from the Articles published within the last drop-down list.
  5. To be notified by e-mail when your alert runs, click the E-mail Notification field. Select if you want the e-mail in ASCII or HTML format.
  6. To have your search string included in the e-mail, click Include query string in e-mail.
  7. In the Subject for E-mail field, enter a subject you will recognize that will appear in the subject line of the Alert e-mail.
  8. In the Address(es) field, enter your e-mail address. If you want to enter multiple e-mail addresses, place a semicolon in between each e-mail address.
  9. When you have finished making changes, click Save.

ACM Digital Library

To sign up for Alerts:

  1. Register (registration link is at top of page)
  2. Then login.
  3. Click on the TOC Service link
  4. Select the journals for which you'd like TOC alerts.
  5. Click Submit.

MLA Bibliography, Literature Online (LION)

In the MLA Bibliography and LION databases you can register to receive notification via email when new records about authors are added.

  1. When entering MLA Bibliography or LION, click on the My Archive link on the left hand side of the screen to register.
  2. Click the Register for Author Alerts link, then the "select new author>>" link to add an author to the list.
  3. Using the My Archive feature you can also access saved searches and records.

Computing Reviews

Follow the My Account link to register and set up alerts in the Computing Reviews database.

  1. When registering, select primary and secondary interests, and the system is automatically set up to send you an e-mail when new reviews are published in your areas of interest.
  2. Once you have created an account, you can log in and manage your Alerts.
  3. Topic alerts appear at the top and correspond to your areas of interest.
  4. Scroll down, and you can add new alerts for Topics, Journals, Authors, Reviewers and Items by clicking on the appropriate Add New buttons and following the on-screen prompts.

Criminal Justice Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts

These two databases permit a user to save a search strategy that will be used to automatically search the particular database(s) for new content every week. You will receive an email message that contains up to 250 new records from each database that has new matching content.

  1. First run a search strategy in your selected database.
  2. Click the Save Search/Alerts button. Any searches you have performed are displayed under the heading of Current Searches.
  3. For the search you wish to save, click Save as Alert.
  4. You will be prompted to enter an email address and personal password which can be the same as you used when you saved searches. Your search, selected databases and a box for entering comments are displayed.
  5. Click Save Alert to complete the process.

Hoover's

To use the E-mail Alerts feature in the Hoover's database, you must first complete a FREE registration - follow the E-Mail Alerts button at the top of the screen to complete the registration process, then after completing your registration, click the E-Mail Alerts button again to begin to set up your Alerts.

  1. To receive updates on companies, industries, keywords, or a combination thereof, follow the "Create a News Alert" link.
  2. To receive updates on significant developments for a particular company, enter and search for your company name or ticker, select the appropriate "Watch this Company" link and follow the on-screen instructions.

American Chemical Society Journals

To sign up for Alerts:

  1. Enter the ACS Journals database.
  2. Click on the Sign Up for Email Alerts button near the top of the page.
  3. Then click on Register for ASAP Alerts or Register for ToC Alerts and follow the on-screen instructions

Ingenta

Once you have run a search in the Ingenta database, you can set up a Search Alert and be notified via e-mail when new items appear in your search results.
  1. Once you have run at least one search you can click on the Saved searches button to see your recent searches.
  2. Click in the box to the left of the search that you want to Save, then click the Go button to save your search.
  3. Next, click on the Saved searches and alerts tab above your list of recent and saved searches
  4. Scroll down to the list of searches and select "Search Alert ON" for the search that you would like to receive updates on, and then click the Update Alerts button.

Table of Contents alerts are also available in Ingenta

  1. After logging into Ingenta using your username and password, follow the Manage Profile link/button on the left hand side of the screen.
  2. Click on the TOC Alerts link.
  3. Browse or search for the publication you would like to add to your Alerts and follow the on-screen instructions.
