Databases

Databases are accessible remotely  by using your Pace University E-Mail account.  Select a database that interest you to activate the Remote Access login page.  Then select Student and enter your Pace University E-Mail username (without @pace.edu) and password.  If you have forgotten your Pace University E-Mail username, you can look it up by accessing Student E-Mail Address Lookup.

NOTE: You still require your library barcode to access other library services!

Before accessing the databases, see Remote Access for additional information.

From the library's main page, select Articles via Databases to search the databases through three options.   Pace University Library has over 100 databases.   Selecting a subject, for example Business, from the Subject Research Area box on the Database Search page will make selection easier. An alphabetical list of databases, with annotations indicating the type of information that is accessible from each database, is provided. WEBFEAT allows you to search multiple databases simultaneously.

APOLLO: A Pace Online Library Literacy Orientation is a guide to help you select databases by considering subject coverage, currency, accessibility, and the type of periodicals contained in a database.  It also includes a section on the differences between scholarly journals, newspapers, and popular magazines.  Keep in mind that the page, "APOLLO", is general and not business focus. (This link will take you off this page.  Use your browser's back button to return).

Remember, accessing the databases remotely requires that you use your Pace University E-Mail account.

Here are databases you may access for information on Computer Science.

Search Example

When performing a Keyword search combine your terms using the Boolean operator AND, and nest terms you want to appear together by putting them within parenthesis.  Here are examples of keyword search:

telecommunications and (voice communications systems)

physics and telecommunications

Subject search can also be performed in most of the databases listed.  Lexis-Nexis Universe provides news that will help you keep up with current information.

GARTNER intraWeb includes a section on Local Area Networking; select research from this database that is applicable to your needs.

Note:  Access Database Instructional Guides to see whether help guides are available for the databases you are searching.  To the right of most databases is, **Help Available**, this is an electronic help guide to familiarize you with the  database to ensure effective searching.

Searching Business and Industry and Business & Management Practices

Once the database has been accessed, that is, you are within the search mode, click on Articles (the interface is the same for both databases) in the top navy blue bar.  Then click on the database you want to search (you can also search both by selecting Search All, this will include the database TableBase which provides information in table format).   Make your selection, Telecommunications from the Industry box, United States from the Region box, more than one concept can be selected from the Concept box (to do so hold down the Shift key on your keyboard).  You can specify a date range (use the format shown in the database), enter your search terms in the long box at the top.

What do these mean? (or, w/n, w/s, w/p, and pre/n, and not)

  • or either or both terms can be retrieved;

  • w/n term A must be within a specified number of words of term B in either direction (A w/5 B), that is A can appear before B, or B can appear before A, but 5 words must be between them;

  • w/s term(s) entered must be in the same sentence;

  • w/p term(s) entered must be in the same paragraph;

  • and pre/n term(s) must precede the second term by number of words specified (A and pre/7 B), this means that A must appear before B with 7 words between them, B cannot appear before A in this case;

  • and not excluding certain terms, ( Cisco Systems and not Cisco Development) will exclude articles on Cisco Development but will retrieve articles on Cisco Systems.

You have searched a database and found the citation to an article you need, which may or may not include an abstract.  How would you know if Pace University Library has the journal, and which database may index that journal and provide full-text articles?  Perform a Journal Title search in the Library Catalogs.  You may be linked to other databases that index the journal.   Electronic Journal allows you to browse journal titles by broad subject categories that Pace Library subscribes to either through print, electronically or both.  Those that are available through the databases will have the extension Ftxt after their name.  For example, Network Computing [Ftxt].

NOTE: Use Ingenta and Infotrieve document delivery services, accessible from the library's databases page, to request full text articles that may not be available in the library databases. Profiles have to be created to use either services. Requests for articles available in the library databases will be terminated.

To use Infotrieve, please send an to e-mail to Account Request to have an account created for you. You have the option of creating your profile for Ingenta or have one created for you by sending an email to Request Account. Before creating your own profile, request the account number by sending an e-mail to Request Account to have the library's account charged. Due to security reasons, the Account Number cannot be provided here. People not affiliated with Pace University would have access to it.
