Cardiogenetics Clinic

Esma D. Paljevic EdD, RN, CPNP, is researching the experiences of families who have participated in a Cardiogenetics Clinic. A Cardiogenetics Clinic utilizes an inter-professional approach to care. Families that are referred to this clinic have suffered the loss of a family member to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). This new model of care offers information, genetic profiles, as well as psychological support and counseling. Study insights may allow interdisciplinary professionals to improve quality of care being provided to SCD families.

The theoretical framework that Professor Paljevic used in this research was Margaret Newman's Theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness. This theory was based on Martha Rogers’s theory of Science of Unitary Beings. In Professor Paljevic’s study, the foundation of this theory is explored with the participants and nurse practitioner for a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of these family members.

Professor Paljevic presented her research this fall at the following conferences: the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG) and the Society of Rogerian Scholars 2013 Conference.
