RN4 Student Wins Scholarship

As part of the Professional Development Program at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ, Deidre Emerich received a $10,000 scholarship along with an employment commitment (for one year and nine months) to work as an RN after obtaining her nursing degree and license. She was chosen out of 10 interviewees for one of three scholarships.

Over the summer, Deidre was a Summer Student Nurse Extern at Overlook Medical Center; she was one of 12 chosen out of over 300 applicants. This was a paid position where she worked three 12-hour shifts a week. She was paired with a nurse preceptor and spent eight weeks on a med/renal/gastro floor where she had the opportunity to receive a hands on, real-world nursing experience.  She also had the opportunity to shadow in the ICU for a day. She says, “After this experience, I feel like I will truly shine in my clinicals senior year.” A requirement of the program was to present an evidence-based practice poster with a partner on a topic of their choice - "Pressure Ulcer Prevention at the End Stages of Life.”  Deidre is on the right in the accompanying photo.

Deidre says, “I think it would be very beneficial for next year's rising seniors to be aware of the opportunities that are available to them, especially if they live in New Jersey or are interested in working in New Jersey after graduation.” More information about the Extern Program and the Professional Development Program can be found here.
