Overview
A concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management prepares students for careers in hotel, food service, and tourism management. Globally, tourism ranks as one of the top three industries in 63 countries. Jobs are plentiful and offer vast opportunities for growth and travel. In New York City, hospitality and tourism contribute an average of $8 billion dollars a year to the economy of the five boroughs.

Lubin's Bachelor of Business Administration in Management program features a concentration in Hospitality and Tourism Management, which prepares you to become a leader in the global industry of tourism. As a student at Lubin, you will have the unique opportunity to study and gain professional experience in New York City, the tourism capital of the world. You will acquire skills in restaurant and foodservices management, hotel operations, event management, as well as tourism management. You will learn contemporary approaches to management in hospitality and tourism from professor and program coordinator, Claudia G. Green, PhD, RD, an industry professional with over 20 years of experience in the field.

Students in the program intern with leading hospitality and tourism organizations in the New York metropolitan area. These organizations include, the New York City Convention and Visitor's Bureau (NYC&Co), Leading Hotels of the World, Le Parker Meridien, The Jumeriah Essex, The Intercontinental, Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Ritz Carlton (New York City/Westchester), Lorelei Event Planning, Abigail Kirsch Catering, and many others. International internships opportunities are established in Italy and Australia as well as other destinations.

Program and Courses
The Hospitality and Tourism Management concentration prepares students for careers in hospitality and tourism, as well as allied supporting services. In this program students learn how to analyze and respond as managers to such environmental factors as changing laws, economic challenges, technological changes, union activities, cultural issues, and domestic and international trends in hospitality and tourism. You will learn the formal and systematic management methods of directing and motivating group efforts toward achieving the organization's primary objective, the optimal allocation of resources.

Since Hospitality and Tourism Management is a specialized area of study, the requirements for this concentration are more extensive than those for the other management areas. Students are required to complete the 22 credits listed below, as well as a laboratory science course in either biology or chemistry, which is applied to the University Core. Accordingly, the elective requirement for students concentrating in Hospitality and Tourism Management is reduced from 17 to 10 credits.

Career Opportunities
The tourism industry, which includes hotel, food service, travel, destinations, and attractions, is now the world's largest industry. In 2010, global tourism exceeded $8 trillion and 328 million jobs, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council forecasts. The U.S. leads in tourism expenditures followed by Japan and Germany.

As tourism increases, there is a simultaneous increase in the demand for lodging, which includes hotels, resorts, motels, spas, time shares, and condominiums. At the current time, there is a labor shortage in this industry. Many organizations are eager to identify viable labor resources for the growing industry demands. Career opportunities for hospitality and tourism management students have expanded beyond U.S. borders, as the industry is expanding in China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

Corporate Internship Opportunities
Students in the Hospitality and Tourism Management concentration are required to have an internship (3 credit hours). Students gain internships through Pace University's extensive Co-operative Education Program, the Hospitality and Tourism program, or through their own contacts. The internship consists of 400 hours of experience. Many of these internships result in student career placement upon graduation. In addition, Pace University is exploring internship relationships with hotel properties in Mexico, Central and South America.

Field Study Courses
Students have the opportunity to study sustainable tourism in various destinations through enrollment in MGT 347, International Management Field Study. The most recent focus has been on sustainable tourism development in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest with the development of a Green Map.
