Overview This concentration prepares students for professional positions in human resources management, in such areas as recruitment, selection, training and development, job evaluation, performance assessment, and compensation administration. Through formal and systematic study of management, students learn methods of directing and motivating group efforts toward achieving the organization's primary objective: the optimal allocation of resources. Program and Courses The Human Resources Management concentration focuses on providing students with breadth and depth of knowledge to analyze, design, and evaluate human resources systems and processes across the full spectrum of human resources management functions. They bring not only academic excellence, but also industry savvy to the classroom. As a closely knit group, management majors receive individual attention from management science faculty both in and outside of class. Career Opportunities Human Resource (HR) professionals have many important roles and responsibilities. For example, HR professionals recruit, interview and hire new employees, develop compensation and benefits packages, ensure employment and labor laws are observed, train, and coach employees across different business functions, and develop strategies for employee retention. According to the US Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs are expected to "grow faster than average" through 2014, and be competitive due to HR being a course at many universities, with 820,000 jobs in 2004 and a projection of 18-26% growth by 2014 or between 967,600 to 1,033,200 for 2014.
