Brother Outsider (NYC)
The LGBTQA and Social Justice Center celebrates Black History Month with a film screening about the work of a man who organized the 1963 March on Washington and a Q&A with his partner as well as the director of the film.
On Monday, February 24, in honor of Black History Month, the LGBTQA and Social Justice Center will present a film screening of Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, from 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., in the Bianco Room.
Brother Outsider illuminates the life and work of Bayard Rustin, best remembered as organizer of the 1963 March on Washington and adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during a fiercely homophobic time and the film reveals the price he paid for this honesty, chronicling both the triumphs and setbacks of his remarkable 60-year career.
Rustin’s work was so important to the Civil Rights Movements that he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama in 2013.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director and producer, Bennett Singer, as well as Bayard's life partner, Walter Naegle.
