President Friedman Goes to China
In December, President Friedman and members of the Pace Alumni Relations team traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong to connect with business leaders, alumni, and parents.
This past December, President Stephen J. Friedman travelled to China where Pace hosted alumni and parent receptions in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong with the objective of helping to raise Pace's profile in the region. The President built stronger ties with our alumni in the region, met with industry leaders to open the discussion regarding internships and job placement, and visited academic partners to discuss trends and opportunities.
President Friedman would like to acknowledge the generosity of alumni Charles Mak ’77, ’80, Vice Chairman Asia Pacific, President, International Wealth Management, Morgan Stanley-Asia, and his wife Audy Mak ’77. During his visit to Hong Kong, the couple committed $250,000 to establish the Mak Family Scholarship Fund to recruit Business Honors Program students at Pace’s Lubin School of Business. VP for Development and Alumni Relations Jennifer Bernstein commented on their generosity, “This gift will enable the University to recruit the best possible students to the Business Honors Program, freeing them from the burden of student debt. We are grateful to Charles and Audy for their longstanding leadership and commitment.”
While abroad, President Friedman presented at the Global Confucius Institute Conference in Beijing on Confucius Institute Planning and University Development. The President was invited to speak at the President’s Forum in recognition of the success and importance of Pace’s Confucius Institute, which provides a wide range or Chinese language and cultural programs. In addition, the Institute offers a Faculty Seminar, which trains Pace faculty from various disciplines on Chinese language and culture along with a two-week field study trip to China. Faculty participants then design cross-disciplinary courses with Chinese related themes.
President Friedman and VP Bernstein met individually with prominent alumni, industry leaders, and academic partners, including Yue Tan, President of China Publishing Group; Jem Li ’99, Managing Partner, Minter Ellison; Yongliang Du, Managing Director, Fixed Income Department, China Securities Co. Ltd.; Chi Chu, Chairman and CEO, Silverstein China; Thierry Roques ’87, VP and CFO, Coca-Cola, Greater China; Wilfried Brouwer, PhD, ’95, President, AO Smith Investments; and Keetung Chao ’84, Chairman, Ningbo Yongxin Optics Co., Ltd., among others.
Pace will continue to develop its relationships in China, building upon current momentum and continuing to reconnect with Pace alumni throughout Asia. With an expected trip in early 2015, we hope to expand our outreach to include academic and cultural events.
