The Professor Is In: Theresa Lant

News Story

Lubin Professor Theresa Lant talks leeches, binge-watching "Orphan Black," and who would be on her dream guest list in this month’s The Professor Is In.

Theresa Lant, PhD, Lubin professor and director of the Arts and Entertainment Management program, bridges business and the performing arts to prepare students for the dynamic industry. Her love for learning propelled her into academia and her passion does not go unnoticed, as she is praised by some of her students for being extremely helpful and making class fun and interesting. In this month’s edition of The Professor Is In, Lant shares a few of her other passions she pursues in her free time, including walks in the woods, trips with her husband and children, her favorite television show to binge watch, and more.

Q: What made you passionate about your current career?
A: I love learning, and I wanted to go into a field in which I could share that love with others. My specific choice of field—organizational behavior—was motivated by wanting to help improve the experience of individuals at work.

Q: What quality do you value most in your students?
A: Being open-minded and willing to learn.

Q: What’s your advice to students to make the most out of their time in college?
A: Take it from someone who is not organized—planning ahead and being organized are your friends. You will be less stressed and will find more time to do the things you love.

Q: If you had to do it all over again and take another path, what profession would you choose?
A: I would still be a scientist—but a wildlife biologist.

Q: What is your favorite word? Least favorite word?
A: My favorite word is serendipity and my least favorite word is synergistic.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure TV show or mobile app?
A: Binge watching Orphan Black with my husband.

Q: What was your favorite class as a student? Least favorite?
A: My favorite classes were in psychology. Statistics classes were my least favorite.

Q: If you were a Pace student, what class would you like to take with another Pace professor?
A: I would like to take an acting class in the performing arts department.

Q: What would you do if you had an extra hour every day?
A: Walk in the woods.

Q: What is your favorite professional or personal journey/experience?
A: Depends how you define “favorite.” My most enjoyable are road trips to national parks with my husband and kids. My most memorable is an eight-hour trek through the Malaysian jungle with my husband and kids, leeches and all.

Q: What are you favorite words to live by?
A: Own your choices and their consequences.

Q: If you could have any five people living or dead, imagined or real, as guests at a dinner party, who would you choose?
A: Gwen Ifil, journalist and host of PBS News Hour and Washington Week; Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood; Georgia O’Keefe, artist; Rachel Carson, marine biologist and author of Silent Spring; and Joan Ganz Cooney, television producer who co-created Sesame Street.
