The Schimmel has one last Pace Presents event for you before you head home for break: The U.S. debut of the avant-garde Maria T. Balanescu Quartet on December 20.
MARIA T. Balanescu Quartet
Friday, December 20 | 7:30 p.m.
Curated by Livesounds.org
The Balanescu Quartet with a worldwide cult following is led by Romanian virtuoso violinist and composer Alexander Balanescu. Pushing the limits of a string quartet Balenscu has collaborated with Lounge Lizard John Lurie, Jack de Johnette, Ornette Coleman, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, David Byrne, the Pet Shop Boys, Spiritualized, Kate Bush, Pina Bausch, and Kraftwerk. This performance, inspired by the legendary Romanian singer, Maria Tanase (1913– 1963), expresses the synergy between classical and traditional music, using computer technology to create a geographical and cultural bridge between the Quartet and Maria Tanase as well as through the unique digital video and stage design of Klaus Obermaier and Steve Arguelles on percussion.
$5 student tickets and $15 faculty and staff tickets for each event can be purchased in advance at the Schimmel box office. For more information and to read all about what the Schimmel has lined up for spring 2013 including Brian Sanders' JUNK, Belgian rapper and crooner Baloji, ABT Studio Company, and Acoustic Underground, visit http://schimmel.pace.edu/.
