He designed for Lady Gaga, Will.i.am., Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars. He made the first-ever pair of 3D printed sunglasses. He brought Batman to life for Comic-Con. Oh, and he’s a Pace alumnus.
Just because you’re a Lubin School of Business alumnus doesn’t mean you’re a “suit.” You could be a straightjacket coat or a neoprene grenade bag with tracking technology or a silicone jacket with embedded dayglow pigments, like Lubin alumnus Asher Levine ’10.
Just months after walking the red carpet at Pace’s Commencement, earning his degree in business, Levine was preparing Hollywood’s hottest stars for their red carpet walks, including fashion-forward Lady Gaga.
He’s been caught in a plaid romance with Gaga since 2010 and has designed custom pieces for her. No, Levine’s not responsible for the infamous meat dress, but this one’s just as juicy: The white straightjacket coat/dress she wore during her Today Show performance, the black motorcycle jacket seen in her Rolling Stone feature, and the black lambskin leather-paneled jumpsuit she had on in her “Marry the Night” music video were all Levine originals, among others. He was also called upon to life cast the iconic face of Beyoncé for her “Mine” music video featuring Drake.
So, why Pace and not Parsons? “I knew how to make clothes, I needed to know accounting, marketing, and all the things fashion school leaves out,” Levine said.
And there’s no question Levine does more than dress stars. At the intersection of fashion, technology, and material innovation, you’ll find Levine and his progressive menswear label. Three years ago, before 3D printing was popular, he made the first pair of downloadable sunglasses. He also partnered with PhoneHalo to develop a neoprene rubber grenade bag that integrates TrackR technology that syncs up with your iPhone or Android app so you can always keep tabs on your bags. And recently was commissioned by Warner Brothers to bring the new Batman: Arkham Knight to life for Batman’s 75th anniversary at San Diego Comic Con.
And Levine continues to push the envelope and develop new ways of designing. When Will.i.am asked Levine to make him a dayglow blue jacket, Levine and his designers need to hit the drawing board. Inventing a new textile made out of silicone with embedded dayglow pigments, Levine hit that boom boom pow.
Speaking to FOX Business’ Risk & Reward with Deirdre Bolton, Levine says “He [Will.i.am] gives me a call up and he goes ‘Asher, it’s Will. A couple things have changed my life. This changed my life, when Fergie joined the Peas, that changed my life, and then this jacket changed my life.’”
You can watch Levine’s full interview here.
All that life-changing and he still has time to keep up with his alma mater. During the fall 2014, Levine paid a visit to the Entrepreneurship Lab at Pace, where he was a semi-finalist at its Pace Pitch Contest, and met with eLab director Bruce Bachenheimer and invited Bachenheimer’s entrepreneurship class to his studio.
Want to meet Levine right at Pace? He’ll be at the Entrepreneurship Lab Networking event on Tuesday, November 4, from 5:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m. in the Bianco Room on the NYC Campus. The event is free to attend, but registration is required. Register here.
