PSYCHOLOGY OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT CLASS TO HOST "STOP HUMAN TRAFFICKING" EVENT TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11
PLEASANTVILLE, NY, November 10, 2008 – Human trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery in which people are oppressed and sold, often in the commercial sex industry, is an international issue, with 27 million people worldwide enslaved, more than at the height of the transatlantic slave trade.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 12:30pm, Pace University will host Katie Burgmayer-Luse from The Salvation Army's Anti-Human Trafficking program, speaking about the injustice of human trafficking and what can be done about it. The Salvation Army helps transition survivors of human sex trafficking back into society with dignity.
The United Nations defines human trafficking as “the recruitment, transportation, harbouring or receipt of persons […] for the purpose of exploitation.” Victims are stripped of their human rights and forced into labor and/or sexual exploits. Most reported figures for human trafficking are for trafficking across national borders. Trafficking within countries is underreported. According to the US State Department, about 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked between countries, approximately 70 percent of whom are female and 50 percent minors. Human trafficking reportedly even happens in the US, most often for sexual exploit.
The event is sponsored by undergraduate Pace students enrolled in this fall’s Psychology of Civic Engagement course.
