Student Engagement

Student Engagement

From kicking up their heels to rolling up their sleeves, here’s just a sampling of student organization events centered around making a difference in the community:

  • Beta Alpha Psi hosted its annual Peanut Butter and Jelly Wars to benefit a local homeless shelter

  • Student organizations worked with Jumpstart to assemble goody bags for more than 100 underprivileged children on the Lower East Side

  • Sigma Delta Tau (ΣΔΤ) raised funds for Prevent Child Abuse America at their annual ΣΔΤ Your Heart Out event

  • National Student Speech Language Hearing Association hosted a Zumbathon to benefit Autism Speaks

In addition, centers under the Office of the Dean for Students play key roles in engaging our students in the community.

  • LGBTQA and Social Justice Center—Works with a variety of community organizations to help address the needs of the LGBTQA community, including providing support services to homeless youth via non-profits New Alternatives and Sylvia’s Place, and participating in the AIDS Walk and National Day of Silence

  • Office of Multicultural Affairs—Raises awareness of multicultural issues, through events such as the yearly Martin Luther King, Jr. speaker series, open to the public, previous guests of which include James McBride, Randall Robinson, and Dr. Bernice King; diversity-related workshops; the annual LGBTQA Film Program; and Latino Evenings at the Theater

  • Residence Halls—Serves as a resource for various serviceoriented summer programs; residents also raise money for charities, take part in community service events such as Green Rooftops and area clean-ups, and facilitate a 9/11 vigil each September
