Jody Williams: A Realistic Vision of World Peace
Jody Williams, a civil rights and peace activist, describes the many actions that women leaders around the world have undertaken to bring about peace in their country as well as throughout the world. One person, in particular, is Rigoberta Menchu Tum, who is educating the indigenous people in her country about the idea of democracy and how they can bring democracy to their country. Tum also conveys that democracy is not just about an equal right to vote, but also being an active citizen.
Williams also highlights her work in the landmine campaign, which works to ban landmines. In the last part of her speech, Williams states that “What we need today is people getting and taking action to reclaim the meaning of peace.” She promotes the idea that we need to be proactive in making a change in this world.
