From Checking Up to Checking In with Res Life

emmanuelblogLast week’s “Check Up From the Neck Up Counseling Center” event, hosted by the Sophomore Scoop Series, generated a great turn out. Three welcoming volunteers greeted students as they hurried on their way to meet with friends, attend meetings, or grab lunch before class. The premise of this event was to educate students on the various ways they can eliminate stress in their lives. Pamphlets of literature were provided with methods to “slow down,” “loosen up,” and “gear up.”  One can de-stress himself by exercising, listening to soothing music, and focusing on peaceful images of scenery. The one method the volunteers advocated and insisted will work is for an individual to take long, deep breathes and concentrate on the exhale and inhale of air. The event’s highlight was a three-minute stress test conducted with the use of a finger monitor and a computer program. Students were asked to place their pointer finger on a touch sensitive pad, which would calculate the student’s stress level. During this process, the student would look at the computer screen that displayed an image of a black and white garden. If the student’s stress level decreased within the three minutes, the black and white image would become animated with colors and sound. If not, it would remain grey. Ultimately, the goal was to eliminate one’s level of stress so that the image would be entirely colored. The event as a whole was successful and helpful, especially during this “stressful” time of year.

As the fall semester begins to conclude, the Sophomore Scoop Series will host two more events in 2009. On November 18, 2009, representatives from Residential Life will be tabling in the Well of the Kessel Student Center; as always, the event will for run three hours from 11am-2pm. Being a resident assistant in one of the residence halls here on campus, I am delighted to see Res Life get involved with the students here at Pace University. One of the ongoing themes that Res Life advocates is instilling a sense of a closely knit community. I strongly encourage residents to make their way to this event on Wednesday afternoon. Resident assistants, as well as resident directors, are often viewed as mean, heartless people. But contrary to popular belief, we are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. So come on down to the Well at the Kessel Student Center and get to know the group who runs your residence halls on a more personal level!

- A special thank you to Melissa Capozzi for assisting me with this week’s blog.
