THE PACE INSTITUTE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND REGIONAL STUDIES
The Pace Institute for Environmental and Regional Studies (PIERS) provides leadership in the study of the complex interrelationships between human culture and nature, with special emphasis on the Hudson River bioregion and its diverse ecological, social and cultural values.
PIERS actively engages in interdisciplinary, university-wide research dedicated to the production and dissemination of knowledge and solutions to pressing environmental problems through roundtable discussions, seminar series on regional issues, a visiting scholar program, and regional conferences. Among the institutes goals are: fostering an understanding and appreciation of those aspects of regional life that relate to human involvement with the natural resources of the bioregion; building a reference reserve for bioregional knowledge through scholarly research; establishing a working relationship between the University community and its neighbors; and promoting environmental education and literacy throughout the University and the Hudson River Valley.
