Barbara S. Pennipede is the assistant vice president of the Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research (OPAIR) at Pace University. This office is concerned with all aspects of institutional effectiveness as it addresses the planning process, institutional and student learning assessment, the functions of institutional research and the efficient and appropriate allocation of academic resources. In this position, Ms. Pennipede oversees and coordinates the separate but inter-related functions of this office. In addition to administrative duties associated with OPAIR, her primary focus is the coordination of assessment activities throughout the University including assistance in the identification, design and implementation of assessment plans for academic departments and programs, academic support and administrative units. She is the Co-Chair of the University-wide Assessment Committee as well as a member of the Assessment Sub-committee of the Core Curriculum Task Force. She is a member of the advisory board of the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology and participates actively in the development and presentation of faculty and staff development programs. Barbara is also a member of the Presidential Grant Review Panel and an active participant in one successfully completed grant and an on-going grant which attempts to identify the complementary learning that is fostered as students participate in organized University activities. She is also a member of the University Committee on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse. Barbara has presented assessment topics in Dyson Teaching Circles and in collaboration with the Pforzheimer Center for Faculty Development. She meets individually with representatives of the Schools and College as well as administrative and academic support units to discuss and assist in assessment issues. She has also presented Getting Started with Assessment through the University's Learn to Excel Program. On the institutional level, she has completed an assessment of the 1997-2002 Strategic Agenda in collaboration with Dr. Joseph Morreale, former Provost. She and Dr. Morreale have presented Pace University's innovative planning, budgeting and assessment cycle at AAHE's Assessment Forum in 2002 and 2003, and this topic was also a featured panel at the 2003 Middle States Association Conference. Barbara moderated a panel consisting of former President Caputo, Dr. Morreale and Len Sippel.
In the area of institutional assessment, Barbara has also coordinated the administration of the Cooperative Institutional Research Program's Freshman Survey for the past three years, as well as the National Survey of Student Engagement in 2002 and 2003, the 2002 administration of the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement, the 2001 administration of the College Student Survey, the 2003 administration of Your First College Year and oversight of the Pell Study and RAND Quality Assessment Initiative. Preparations are in progress for the next administration of the National Survey of Student Engagement and a new cohort study for the RAND Quality Assessment Initiative.
Barbara previously served as the assistant dean for evening and weekend programs at the Pleasantville Campus. During her 16 year hiatus from Pace, Barbara served as associate academic dean of the Englewood Cliffs Campus of Saint Peter's College. During her tenure at Saint Peter's College, she served as the senior academic officer responsible for the on-site supervision of the Englewood Cliffs Campus, which serves approximately 500 adult learners enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. Her College-wide responsibilities included the administration of a $90,000 Sandoz Foundation Grant to improve student retention, Chair of the Retention Steering Committee, Chair of the Adult Student Advisement Task Force, and member of the President's Enrollment Council.
Since 1992, Barbara has been involved in outcomes assessment activities and chaired the ad hoc Committee on Academic Information and Assessment at Saint Peter's College. The College-wide Assessment Plan developed by this Committee was unanimously endorsed by the Faculty Senate prior to her leaving Saint Peter's. Long involved in evaluation activities as a member of the National Board of Directors of the Association for Continuing Higher Education, Barbara serves as a peer evaluator on Middle States Association evaluation teams both as an outcomes assessment evaluator and as an evaluator for programs of adult and continuing education. She has presented widely on retention, adult learning and assessment issues and has published two articles on the retention of adult part-time learners.
Barbara received an M.S. in Education with a specialty in Corrective Reading from Lehman College of the City University of New York and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and Social Sciences from St. John's University.
