MSEd in Special Education
Visit our Academic Web site for detailed information about this major.
The Master’s of Science in Education (MSEd) in Special Education is designed for individuals who already hold a Childhood or Adolescent Provisional or Initial Certificate or the equivalent. The program simultaneously prepares teachers to enhance their knowledge of disabilities to be more effective in their classroom and also to be specialists in their schools. The program is a 30 credit-hour program that leads to the permanent and/or the Professional Certificate in Teaching Students with Disabilities.
The MSEd program is an evening program that allows the career changer and college graduate to work during the day while attending class at night, and is available on our Westchester and New York City campuses. Classes are scheduled in the evening, with each class meeting one evening per week for three hours. On the Westchester campus, MSEd courses are scheduled during the fall and spring semesters from 4:30 p.m. - 7:20 p.m. or from 7:30 p.m. - 10:20 p.m. (It should be noted, however, that most courses are offered at the earlier hour.) On the NYC campus, MSEd courses are scheduled during the fall and spring semesters from 5:30 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. During the summer sessions on both campuses, courses meet twice a week in the late afternoon or early evening.
Special Education candidates may choose to pursue the program on a full- or part-time basis. Nine credits is considered full-time study at the graduate level, and candidates may not register for more than three courses in the fall and spring semesters. In addition, candidates are limited to registering for no more than one course in each of the two summer sessions.
Candidates enrolled in full time study should plan 18-24 months to complete the program; candidates enrolled part time should plan 2-3 years to complete the MSEd in Special Education.
All candidates with teacher certification who are interested in applying to the MSEd in Special Education must file the Application for Admission.
