iPace Program: BS in Disabilities & Community Living

Offered by Pace’s School of Education in collaboration with the Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) organization in New York, this program is designed for caregivers, human services personnel, and members of community-based service organizations serving children, the elderly and adults with disabilities or mental health issues.  You will develop the enhanced skills and knowledge important for professional advancement, including preparation for leadership and supervisory roles in providing critical support services that make full community participation a reality for persons with disabilities. 

This program consists of online classes with a limited number of sessions hosted at central locations in New York City, Long Island, or Westchester County.  Students can attend these sessions in person or online using a synchronous connection.

What you learn
The program is collaboratively designed by leaders of human service organizations for human service professionals to complete the major courses in a sequence of thematic strands: Disability in the 21st Century; Human Development & Psychology; Leadership and Management in Human Services Organizations; and Interventions & Support Systems. As designed, the iPace DCL program will provide the necessary training and professional skill enhancement to complement a student’s previous experiences to improve the quality of care to meet the needs of persons with disabilities in the metropolitan area and beyond.

The program is delivered in a hybrid learning format, including online coursework, with community site-based and face-to-face learning experiences.

Our interdisciplinary/multidisciplinaryprogram and related fieldwork experiences are further enriched by encouraging students, activists, teachers, human service staff, parents and researchers to engage and share their perspectives and previous experiences.
  • Convenient. The iPace DCL program will be offered primarily in a hybrid format of online and in-class meetings. These face-to-face sessions are scheduled to minimize travel demands for students. For a true distance learning experience, students will be able to complete this degree fully online, by signing into site sessions remotely.
  • Transformative. The DCL program will explore models and theories that examine social, political, cultural, and economic factors that define disability and help diminish the stigmatization of disability and difference in the community.
  • Inclusive. This program ensures physical and intellectual access by actively encouraging participation by disabled students and faculty, through an emphasis on principles of Universal Design for Learning.

Prerequisites/Admission Requirements

No entrance exam is required. A total of 120 credits are required for the complete iPace bachelor’s degree, including University liberal arts and sciences requirements. Students should enter the program with a minimum of 56 completed college credits and a preferred minimum GPA of 2.5, with at least one credit-bearing college-level writing course or demonstration of writing ability through an examination provided by Pace University. Applicants with a GPA  lower than a 2.5 but who demonstrate academic ability may be asked to submit a letter of recommendation form a colleague or supervisor, or asked to submit a writing sample.

Students with less than 56 credits can enter into the Associates degree program and simultaneously take the BS DCL course schedule. Applicants should contact the Pace University Admissions Office for information regarding pre-iPace eligibility, Experiential Learning credits and credit for CLEP exams. Students who have earned an Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution may be eligible to apply all credits toward the prerequisite minimum of 56 credits and a maximum of 68 credits. Additional credit from four-year institutions may be considered for transfer if they satisfy iPace major requirements for a maximum transfer allowance of 90 credits. All others will have transcripts reviewed to ensure successful completion of a minimum of at least 32 Liberal Arts and Sciences credits. Note that you must earn a grade of “C” or better for past coursework to be accepted, and some credits may not be accepted if earned more than 15 years ago.
