New TESOL Program to Prepare Educators to Meet Important Student Needs

The School of Education is pleased to announce a new program of study: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).  As the number of English Language Learners (ELLs) in the U.S. has been steadily increasing and continues to grow in this country, so too rises the demand for qualified teachers who can help these students excel academically. Pace University’s TESOL Programs will prepare students to meet certification requirements and will provide students with the knowledge and skills in linguistic and multi-cultural communication necessary for English language learners to learn and achieve.

The TESOL degree will be offered through a 30-credit Master of Science for Teachers (MST) program for college graduates and career changers, as well as a 15-credit Advanced Certificate for professional educators who hold a bachelor’s degree and certifications to teach. The Pace TESOL program will prepare candidates to cross the borders of language to promote successm in culturally  and linguistically diverse classrooms, and teach English to people of all ages.

“By offering TESOL programs for certification, we are facilitating regional educators to gain the expertise to reach students with limited English proficiency, to help students in this growing population become successful and life-long learners,” said Dean Spencer of the program.

Candidates who successfully complete either our MST or Advanced Certificate program will be certified to teach English to speakers of other languages in grades Pre K-12. Graduates of this new program will be qualified to work in public and private schools (locally and internationally) and non-traditional settings, and as become ESL materials specialists, administrators and researchers. The programs are available on both or New York City and Westchester campuses, with full- and part-time study available.
