Center for Environmental Legal Studies
Since its inception in 1982, the Center for Environmental Legal Studies oversees all of Pace Law School's environmental academic programs and research centers, including the Environmental Litigation Clinic; the Pace Energy and Climate Center; the Land Use Law Center; the Pace Academy for Applied Environmental Sciences; the Science, Technology, and Policy Center; and the Kheel Center for the Resolution of Environmental Interest Disputes.
The Center for Environmental Legal Studies anchors several projects addressing energy conservation, international environmental law, and sustainable development. Students working with the Center for Environmental Legal Studies also assist with researching and editing important publications, such as the GreenLawJournal. Student efforts in the Center led to the 2008 passage of a Law School sustainability policy and the creation of a campus vegetable garden. The Center is a voting member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network. Through the Center and IUCN, students participate in identifying practical solutions to pressing environmental challenges.
The Center for Environmental Legal Studies hosts many of the environmental programs research efforts. The Center holds periodic national and international symposia and conferences including the North American Conference on the Judiciary in December 2004, the annual National Association of Environmental Law Societies conference in March 2005 and the International Union for the Conservation of the Nature’s 4th annual Academy of Environmental Law Colloquium on Environmental Enforcement and Compliance. Pace law students assisted with organizing all of these programs. Students working with the Center also assist with researching and editing important publications including the editing of the recent United Nations Environment Programme Training Manual on Environmental Law now in use worldwide and a chapter on state greenhouse gas laws for an American Bar Association book on climate change.
