Jay C. Carlisle II

Professor Jay C. Carlisle II has practiced law since 1970. He joined Pace in 1978 and has taught courses in Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure, Negotiations, Professional Responsibility, Civil Litigation in New York, Dispute Resolution, Remedies, Evidence, Civil Rights Law and the Legal Profession. He is the recipient of the first annual Barbara Salken Outstanding Professor Award and was selected as Commencement Speaker by the graduating Class of 2001. He lectures for the Practising Law Institute, the New York State Trial Lawyers Institute, the Office of Court Administration, and the New York State Judicial Institute. The American Bar Association and the American Law Institute presented Professor Carlisle with a Harrison Tweed Special Merit Award for his contributions to continuing legal education.

Professor Carlisle was appointed by the Chief Judge of New York to the Task Force on Women and the Courts. Governor Mario Cuomo appointed Carlisle as a commissioner and then Chairperson of the Temporary State Commission on Local Government Ethics Public Advisory Council, and Governor George Pataki named him to a Select Committee on Cameras in the Courts. Since 1999 Carlisle has served as a referee for the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct and has been a special master for the Supreme Court and New York since 1980. Also, Carlisle is the recipient of several Bar Association awards for his pro bono service. In June 2009, Prof. Carlisle was appointed to a three year term on the Board of Directors of the Westchester County Bar Foundation and later elected as the Foundations Vice-President.

Professor Carlisle has published extensively in the area of civil litigation, procedure and professional responsibility and is an elected life fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Carlisle is a past member of the Board of Editors for the fourteen-volume treatise on New York Civil Practice by Weinstein Korn and Miller and has authored the annual jurisdictional survey for the New York State Trial Lawyer Institute since 1989. Professor Carlisle's scholarship on New York Law has been cited by State and federal courts, including the New York State Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Professor Carlisle has testified as an expert witness on New York law before state and federal courts and before the International Court of Arbitration in Paris and the High Court of Appeal in London.

He received his AB in 1965 from the University of California at Los Angeles and his JD in 1969 from the University of California, Davis, School of Law. From 1969 to 1970 Professor Carlisle was a graduate student at the School of International Affairs and the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University. He has taught at the Pace London Law Program for the spring semesters in 1989 and 2009. Carlisle received the Pace Law School Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Service in 2007.

Professor Carlisle was appointed a member of the New York State Law Revision Commission by Governor David A. Paterson effective March 18, 2009. The commission is the oldest continuous agency devoted to law reform through legislation.
