Judging the Competition

If you are interested in judging, please complete the Judging Form and send to us.  We will confirm your request and per your preference will either email or mail you the problem, bench memo and instructions in mid to end January.

To provide our competitors with a high quality experience, we ask that our judges become familiar with all preparatory materials that we send before the oral phase of the competition. Attorneys should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to their scheduled round for final instructions.

CLE Credits for Judging

Attorneys admitted to the New York bar for more than two years may earn two practice credits per round of judging.  Attorneys in states other than New York will need to check with their respective state CLE departments to determine if the program will satisfy their state’s requirements. According to New York State CLE rules, newly admitted attorneys (attorneys admitted to the bar less than two years from the competition date) cannot earn CLE credits for judging moot competitions. Attorneys must sign in and out on the attendance sheet before and after each round of judging in order to receive CLE credits.

Special Environmental Ethics CLE Program

Ethical Issues In Environmental Risk Management: Ensuring that Environmental Professionals, Risk Managers, Brokers and Counsel Do the Right Thing!

In connection with the competition, we are offering an ethics CLE program on Thursday, February 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The program will provide information on a number of practical ethical concerns pertinent to environmental lawyers. Competition judges may enroll in the CLE program at a special reduced rate.

A panel of leading experts in minimizing environmental risks will cover issues in environmental ethics based upon real-world scenarios. How to get the most for your clients while knowing where the boundaries are for all involved is crucial to negotiating complex transactions that involve real estate. This presentation will provide the skills you need to ask the right questions and know how to find the right answers.  John Nevius, Chair of the Environmental Law Group in the New York office of Anderson Kill & Olick; Jeffrey A. Cohen, Shareholder in Anderson Kill's New Jersey office; Randall Young, Regional Attorney, Region 6, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Gene Devine, Senior Vice President, Arthur J. Gallagher & Company will comprise the panel.

The program will begin promptly at 5:00 pm.  Attorneys admitted in New York are eligible for two (2) ethics credits; attorneys admitted in other states must check with their respective CLE departments to determine if the program will satisfy their home state’s requirements.

To register for the ethics CLE program, please fill out the registration form on the Judging Form. For those attorneys judging the competition oral arguments, we offer the program at the discounted rate of $50. To qualify for the discount, the registration form and payment must be submitted with the NELMCC Judging Form. For those who are unable to judge, but wish to attend the program, the fee is $100. Please note that all CLE registration fees are non-refundable. Preregistration is requested.
