New BS in Information Technology to Launch Next Fall

New BS in Information Technology
Available fall 2010, the newly developed BS in Information Technology (IT) will allow students the flexibility of combining their personal interests with a broadly based foundation in IT so that they are prepared to pursue careers that not only provide a promising future but are also fun and financially rewarding.

The degree is designed for:

  • those who know what direction they want to go in but are concerned that traditional career paths might be limited;
  • undecided students who wish to explore various disciplines before committing to a defined course of study; and
  • transfer students who would find the flexibility of this new offering attractive.
In addition to completing the University Core Curriculum, students enrolled in the BS in Information Technology are required to take foundation IT courses in hardware and software systems, networking, database administration, security, and Web and digital media. In order to gain greater depth, the program allows the student to explore one or more specialized areas such as information management, networking, security, Web and digital media, or problem-solving and systems as a career focus.

Pursuit of an interdisciplinary focus in an area of their own choosing provides students with a context for the use of technology in their intended careers. Possible interdisciplinary areas include criminal justice or management science but students have the option, with departmental oversight, of drawing on their interest in the arts, sciences, writing, or education to create their own interdisciplinary sequence.

Students are also at liberty to complete multiple career or interdisciplinary concentrations or to explore any number of subject areas of interest by applying the generous number of free elective credits available to them.

A capstone project that integrates what the student has learned or a real world, supervised internship completes the program. BS in Information Technology graduates will be ready to enter the workforce with confidence knowing they have the knowledge and skills to succeed.
