Gerontech Research Team Partnering with Telikin
Telikin, a Pennsylvania-based company that has developed touch-screen computers for use by senior citizens, has asked Pace’s Gerontech Research Team, led by Professor Jean Coppola, to partner with them to research and test their products. To-date, Telikin has provided six computers and one large print keyboard that are currently on loan to various community facilities that participate in our intergenerational computing program.
The Telikin computer features a touch screen, large graphics and an easy to navigate homepage that allows for easy access to numerous functions including, among others, the Internet, family photos, and video phone capability using Skype. The company’s goal is to provide seniors with a positive computing experience that helps them to stay in touch with family and friends at an affordable price.
Of the six computers currently on loan, two went to the Henry Street Settlement, two to the United Hebrew of New Rochelle and two to The Hallmark in Battery Park City.
Testing is being done by several graduate students to see how easily older adults adjust to using the various Telikin features and how well the computer helps seniors undergoing long-term rehabilitation with eye-hand coordination.
