Pace University is now part of the Faculty
Resource Network, based at New York University. One benefit of
our membership is our inclusion in the Friday Faculty Forums. On Friday,
November 1, 2002, I was able to attend the luncheon, the topic of which
was "How to Balance Administrative Work, Teaching, Writing and Other
Things," by Sheril Antonio, Associate Dean of Film, Television and
New Media at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. About 60
faculty members, from about 17 universities, attended the luncheon, including
the three faculty-in-residence at NYU from Howard, Iona and New Rochelle.
The speaker was excellent - she had us all think about what our "philosophy"
of work is, which we wrote on 3X5 cards. Do we live to work, or work to
live? It doesn't matter which, as long as you know. Sheril also talked
about wearing many hats-she suggested we wear one at a time. She did this
visually, by swapping hats. This made a very big impression on me, so
if you see me around campus carrying a number of "hats" you'll
know why!
We encourage all faculty members to consider attending one of the luncheons
in the future - they are currently scheduled for the Fridays, March 7
and April 4, 2003. The topics will be announced, but regardless of the
topic, don't miss the chance to meet other faculty in the FRN!
Faculty Resource Network Fall Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Beverly Kahn, Connie Knapp and Jim Stenerson spent the weekend before
Thanksgiving at the Faculty Resource Network Fall meeting in San Juan,
Puerto Rico, along with about 95 other faculty members from colleges all
over the country. The topic of the symposium was "Being a Professor."
Friday we talked about the challenges of meeting student needs, and on
Saturday we talked about the challenges of meeting institutional imperatives.
Beverly and Jim attended the pre-symposium meeting for FRN liaison officers,
while Connie attended a pre-symposium session discussing the links between
the university and the community. Beverly Kahn moderated Saturday morning's
panel discussion regarding institutional imperatives.
Our host university, the University of the Sacred Heart in Puerto Rico,
had full days of sessions planned for us, and an evening of culture and
music. We came away with a respect for the history and culture of Puerto
Rico, grateful for the break and for the chance to look at our day-to-day
activities from a different perspective.
