The Pace student body is in desperate need of a community devoted to fostering equality amongst students that leaves no one behind, regardless of their background. Part of being in a position of leadership dedicated to this goal is building and encouraging an environment that allows for students to be, feel and express who they are and to speak their mind in a mature and responsible manner. Our society will grow with or without us, but I'd much rather we do it together. So, vote for Ebony Turner for your VP of Unity and Social Justice for 2012- 2013.
What interests you about being a candidate for the Student Association Executive Board?
Being a candidate for the Student Association Executive Board provides a platform for me to execute events and share my ideas to better the Pace University community at a greater scale. There is an infinite amount of resources, as well as driven and ambitious individuals within the Student Association with the same goals as myself.
What makes you the best candidate for the position?
I am the best candidate for VP of Unity and Social Justice because at every turn in my educational career, I have been approached with issues surrounding the problems this position is focused on mending. Fostering a community devoted to justice and unity, especially on a college campus, requires that no minority or majority is left out of the conversation. There is no place for ignorance in our ever evolving society. As young adults preparing for the real world, it is important that we graduate not only intellectually, but we leave college prepared to work and surround ourselves comfortably with a diverse palate of people. All of this begins and ends with the community we build right here on Pace's campus, and I believe that I am more than capable of helping create it.
What are the core values you associate with the term "student leadership"? Please elaborate.
Student leadership is a unique term in that three definitive values can be associated with it: responsibility, accountability and purpose. Responsibility, because not only does on have the integrity of the student body to keep in mind, but they must always represent themselves that is aligned with their role as a leader. Accountability because part of being a leader is realizing that you must answer to something larger than yourself and your actions must be appropriated correctly. If and when anything goes wrong, the leader must take the fall because even if it was not directly their fault it was under their leadership that the fault occurred. Purpose because without purpose there is no direction. Without direction a person is simply unable to guide anyone toward a goal.
How/why does effective student leadership require ethics and integrity?
Without ethics and integrity, student leadership cannot be executed thoroughly. Leadership thrives on being honest in what goals one wishes to accomplish and doing so in a fair and coherent manner. Successful leadership cannot be achieved by way of unprofessional behavior because what is being done is much bigger than a persons ego and personal issues.
How will your legacy at Pace University look?
I hope my legacy at Pace will be a person dedicated to bettering the environment at Pace for future students and for the current ones moving into the real world. If no one even so much as directly acknowledges me, I hope they changed their actions for the better because of the small effort I contributed to Pace.
