The Lienhard School of Nursing is named for the late Gustav O. Lienhard, Pace alumnus and honorary trustee of the University Nursing was first established at Pace in 1966 with the introduction of a pre-professional program at the Pleasantville campus. By 1971, nursing was offered at the New York City campus and the Undergraduate School of Nursing was founded. Responding to commu- nity needs, the first professional Bachelor of Science degree-nursing program was established in 1973. At the same time, the Graduate School of Nursing, formerly associated with the New York Medical College, became an official school of the University. In keeping with the current organizational structure of the various schools within the University, the Graduate and Undergraduate Schools of Nursing were unified in 1979 into the Lienhard School of Nursing. The Lienhard School of Nursing offers the Bachelor of Science degree, designed to prepare students for careers in professional nursing. Graduates of the program are prepared as generalists in the profession, capable of assuming beginning positions in nursing in all areas of health care delivery. There are three ways to earn a bachelor’s degree in the Lienhard School of Nursing. The first is the traditional four-year program (BS), which is offered on the Pleasantville campus only. The second is the Combined Degree Program (BSN/ MS), designed for the college graduate with a baccalaureate degree in an area other than nursing. After 15 credits of science prerequisites are met, the BSN portion can be completed in one calendar year of full-time study. The BSN portion of the program is offered on the New York City and Pleasantville campuses. Graduates of these two programs are eligible for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX/RN). The third way to earn a bachelor’s degree in the Lienhard School of Nursing is through the track offered for RNs with an associate degree or a diploma in nursing. Students in this track who have previously completed the University core curriculum may complete the BS nursing portion of the program in one year. An RN/MS option is available for those registered nurses who have already completed an associate degree or diploma nursing program and who have additional college credits. This option is offered on both the New York City and Pleasantville campuses. The Department of Graduate Studies offers advanced specialization in nursing. The purpose of the master’s program is to prepare nurses to practice as family nurse practitioners, women’s health care nurse practitioners, or as advanced practice nurses in nursing informatics. The master’s degree provides the student with a foundation for doctoral study in nursing. The Department of Graduate Studies also offers the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study and a special Bridge Program for the nurse with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing (NUR 589). Consult the Lienhard School of Nursing Graduate Catalog for additional information. The Family Nurse Practitioner Collaborative Nursing Informatics, and Master of Arts in Nursing Leadership are offered on both the New York City and Pleasantville campuses. Designed to prepare students for careers in the health care system, all the nursing programs combine academic education with supervised clinical experience in hospitals and community agencies. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them as members of the University community.
