Dyson College of Arts and Sciences 67 DEGREE PROGRAMS FOR ADULT STUDENTS The bachelor of arts in liberal studies and the bachelor of science in professional studies are degree programs specifically designed to meet the needs of adult students who are returning to school. These individuals often have accumulated considerable knowledge as a result of their life experience. Where such knowledge can be demon- strated, documented, evaluated, and deemed to be in accordance with the curriculum and standards of the University, students may receive up to 36 college credits toward either degree. A maximum of 32 business credits may be applied, as electives only, to either degree. Elec- tives may not be used to accumulate more than 18 credits of advanced course work at Pace in any single discipline. Students in these programs will have the opportunity to take many of their courses online using Web-based instruction. For further information on these programs, please consult the academic advisor in the Office of the Dean, Dyson College of Arts and Sciences. B.A. in Liberal Studies This degree program will be attractive to adult students who may be pursuing a career but wish to complete an undergraduate major that allows a great deal of flexibility in programming. Three concentrations are possible in the program: the Communications and Literature Concentra- tion, the Criminal Justice and Sociology Concentration, and the General Liberal Studies Concentration. The 32- credit interdisciplinary concentration is combined with 56 General Education credits, a 4-credit Capstone course, and 28 open elective credits for a total of 120 credits. A maximum of 30 business credits may be applied to the program. The program may accommodate transfer, Experiential Learning and CLEP credits. The General Liberal Studies Concentration is the most flexible of the three and may be built around a theme of the student’s choosing. Examples include American studies, children’s studies, international studies, government, philosophy and religious studies. The two more focused concentrations are available online, as are many courses that students may apply to the Liberal Studies major, though students are free to choose online or on-site courses. In each concentration, students work closely with advisors from the Dyson College to construct a meaningful and coherent educa- tional experience. B.S. in Professional Communication Studies The B.S. in professional communication studies is an accelerated degree program designed to prepare students for successful professional careers in the field of commu- nication. This interdisciplinary major includes courses in business, communication, and computer science. It is an innovative, online accelerated degree program for adults who have experience in the workplace and an A.S. or A.A. degree or the equivalent (64 credits). The program is supported by Dyson College and Pace University’s Office of Adult and Continuing Education, which has tradition- ally been responsible for lending support to the adult undergraduate student, evaluating prior college-level credit and evaluating life experience for academic credit.
