Bb Course View Guide

Blackboard Ultra represents a major change from Blackboard Original. While it contains a number of new and convenient features, it is also missing some features with which you may be familiar. Consult the table below to find workarounds or solutions for these missing features (many of which will be added in the future)

Navigation

Category Difference from Bb Original Function Recommended Solution in Ultra
Navigation Current Courses is default rather than the actual current semester (e.g. Fall 2019). Courses in the course list are listed alphabetically and can't be manually reordered. While course order cannot be changed, instructors can "favorite" their current term's classes by clicking on the star icon. This will cause the classes to float to the top of Current Courses, making them easier to access.
Can only create two "layers" of folders. Instructors can use this opportunity to develop "flatter" courses, with less folders within folders. This has the added benefit of making the course easier to navigate for students.
Cannot make a course link (a hyperlink to another item or area in the course). Course Links will be added to Ultra in the future. In the meantime, instructors can provide directions for students on where in the course they need to go. Ultra courses are "flatter" and it is generally easier for students to locate content.
Communication The instructor is receiving an overwhelming amount of email notifications from Blackboard. While email notifications cannot be shut off entirely, by going into the Activity Stream from the Institution Page and clicking on the gear icon, then the envelope icon, the instructor can select "Email me once a day". Instructors can also uncheck boxes here for which they do not wish to be notified at all.
Wiki feature is unavailable. While this function will no longer be part of Blackboard, instructors can use Google Sites or OneNote's Class Notebook feature as a replacement.
Email function is unavailable. This feature has been incorporated into the Message feature. When sending out a message out to your class, there is a checkbox instructors can select labelled "Send an email copy to recipients".
Blogs and Journals features are unavailable. These features will be added to Ultra in the future. In the meantime, instructors can use OneNote's Class Notebook feature as a replacement.
Grading & Assessment Can only drop one lowest grade, and no more. Instructors can manually construct a new Gradebook column and enter a score reflecting as many dropped grades as necessary.
Must always enter a numeric score for an assignment, even if you want to have a letter grading scheme. Instructors who use a letters as their primary grading scheme are recommended to stay with Original Course View at this time.
Retention Center feature is unavailable. It is not known when this feature will be implemented. Instructors who use the Retention Center are recommended to stay with Original Course View.
The "Membership" function of Adapative Release is unavailable. This feature is set to be added in the future. In the meantime, if you frequently assign an exam or assignment to a select student (e.g. as a make-up exam), it is recommended that you stay with Original Course View.
Certain question types, such as Hotspot and Formulas, are unavailable. Question types are continually being added to Ultra. In the meantime, instructors who use Hotspot or Formula questions are recommended to stay with Original Course View.
Groups created in the course using the option "Course Groups" under Roster do not appear when making a group assignment. When building a group assignment, instructors should create groups in the assignment creation panel, not from the "Course Groups" option under Roster.
The "tagging" feature in question banks/pools is unavailable. This feature is set to be added in the future. In the meantime, instructors who make use of question tagging are recommended to stay with Original Course View.
Kaltura Students cannot embed Kaltura Videos in assignment submissions. This is a known issue. Kaltura and Blackboard are currently working on the problem. If this a critical component of the course, instructors are encouraged to use the Original course view.
Miscellaneous Course photo roster feature is unavailable. Teachers can see student photos by: 1) telling students to upload a profile photo, or 2) using the Qwickly attendance tool.
NBC Learn content cannot be added from the rich-text editor. While this content cannot be added using the rich-text editor, it can be still be added to the course by clicking on the plus sign to add content, and then selecting Content Market.
Poll Everywhere is unavailable. It is not known when this feature will be implemented. Instructors who use Poll Everywhere are recommended to stay with Original Course View.
