Going the Extra Mile

“I really felt like I was making a difference,” Nicholas Casanova ’16 says, thinking back to his first big opportunity at Pace during his freshman year. Thanks to the help of Pace’s Career Services, the global marketing student threw himself into local politics and secured an internship with Christine Quinn’s mayoral campaign. “It was really hands on, community based, and policy based at the same time. I felt more connected to the city, even coming from Miami.”

But even trading sandy beaches for soaring skyscrapers, Casanova says the transition was easy because he was able to take his passion for politics to the next level. Casanova and his parents were heavily involved in politics back in Miami; he even volunteered for President Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign back in 2008. When he came to Pace, he was determined to continue in that tradition, but he needed some help. Casanova says he hardly knew how to put a resume together when he arrived in the Big Apple. “My adviser held my hand through every single step of how to organize my resume, how to do a cover letter, where to look online—because he saw the passion I had, he gave as much passion to me and my goals and helped me to find an internship.”

Since then, Casanova has taken on a variety of responsibilities and positions in both politics and marketing. He’s been the director of marketing for Pace’s Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA), he’s worked with the Residence Hall Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s NYC chapter; and he’s even volunteered for President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign.

Of all his experiences, he’s particularly proud of his time working with ALPFA because it allowed him to work with big name organizations, such as JPMorgan Chase and BNY Mellon, as well as give his fellow Pace classmates marketing opportunities as well. “It really went hand-in-hand with what I wanted to do for myself, and what I wanted to do for the future of other students,” he says.

At present, Casanova interns for the World Trade Center Association’s Events Management Department. “It’s great because it’s more of an internationally-based, marketing-focused position,” Casanova says, one in line with this global marketing major. He’s responsible for helping to schedule events in more than 300 World Trade Center locations worldwide, from the Midwest to Southeast Asia.

Up next for Casanova: The Mayor’s office. Casanova recently accepted a summer internship position in New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office. He’s also got his eye on the 2016 president election and has applied to work on Hillary Clinton’s run for Oval Office. And with one more year left at the University, Casanova is going the extra mile to make Pace—and beyond—a better place.

“I feel like we live in such a great place, but there are so many things that still need to be [improved] in New York and even abroad as well, so I’m working every single day with my professional pursuits and the opportunities given to me to make a change in my community,” he says.
