2016 Honorary Degree Recipients

We are pleased to announce the 2016 Honorary Degree recipients! 

Law School

Eric T. Schneiderman
New York State Attorney General 
Degree: Doctor of Laws (LLD)
Eric T. Schneiderman will be the speaker and honorary degree recipient at the Pace Law School commencement ceremony. Schneiderman was elected the 65th Attorney General of New York State in 2010. Before becoming Attorney General, Schneiderman served in the New York State Senate. Among his legislative accomplishments, Schneiderman led the effort to reform the outdated Rockefeller drug laws, and penalized health insurance companies that were denying coverage to certain populations. He also enacted the toughest law in the nation to root out fraud against taxpayers.
Schneiderman previously served as a public interest lawyer, representing tenants trying to evict drug dealers from their buildings, women seeking access to health clinics, and taxpayers in historic lawsuits against the MTA. He also spent 15 years in private practice at the firm of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart. He graduated from Amherst College in 1977 and Harvard Law School in 1982.
As Attorney General, Schneiderman has taken on a range of cases affecting individuals in New York and across the country, including: co-chairing President Obama’s national working group to hold financial institutions accountable for the housing crisis and collecting $60 billion in cash and consumer relief from the nation’s largest banks; suing Donald Trump and Trump University for defrauding thousands of students; and holding fossil fuel companies accountable for their disclosures to investors about the risks posed to their businesses by climate change.

Westchester Undergraduate

Leonard S. Schleifer, M.D., Ph.D.
Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer, Regeneron 
Degree:  Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD)
Leonard S. Schleifer, M.D., Ph.D. is the speaker and honorary degree recipient for Pace’s Westchester undergraduate commencement ceremony. Dr. Schleifer is Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Regeneron, a leading science-based biopharmaceutical company based in Tarrytown, New York that discovers, invents, develops, manufactures, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions.
Dr. Schleifer founded the company in 1988, has been a Director and its President and Chief Executive Officer since its inception, and served as Chairman of the Board from 1990 through 1994. From 1984 to 1988 he was Assistant Professor at the Cornell University Medical College in the Departments of Neurology and Neurobiology. Dr. Schleifer received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Schleifer is a licensed physician and is certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

New York Undergraduate

Joy Mangano
President and Founder of Ingenious Designs
Degree: Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD)
This year’s honorary degree recipient and speaker for Pace’s New York City undergraduate commencement ceremony is Pace alumna Joy Mangano, product inventor and President of Ingenious Designs LLC, which she founded in 1991.  Fox’s award winning film JOY (2015), written and directed by David O. Russell and starring Jennifer Lawrence, tells the story of Joy’s inspiring journey from a struggling single mother to one of the most celebrated and respected product minds of her time.
Joy’s life mission has been to make her customers’ lives a little better and a little brighter with her ideas.  Mangano holds over 100 patents, and her inventions include the Miracle Mop, Huggable Hangers, and My Little Steamer.  She appears with her products regularly on leading live content retailer HSN, and is featured in national retailers such as Macy’s, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and The Container Store.  She is considered one of electronic retailing’s most successful brands, having sold over $3 billion of her products over her 25-year career.  In addition to her business ventures, Joy established the Joy Mangano Foundation, a private family foundation developed to empower American Dreamers everywhere.
She received her BBA from Pace University’s Lubin School of Business in 1978.

Graduate-Level Ceremony

David J. Shulkin, M.D.
Under Secretary for Health, Veterans Health Administration
Degree: Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD)
Pace’s graduate commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient will be The Honorable Dr. David J. Shulkin, Under Secretary for Health for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. As the Chief Executive of the Veterans Health Administration, Dr. Shulkin leads the nation’s largest integrated health care system with over 1,700 sites of care, serving nearly 9 million veterans each year.
Prior to being nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the United States Senate, as Under Secretary for Health, Dr. Shulkin served in numerous chief executive roles including as President at Morristown Medical Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute, the Atlantic Health System Accountable Care Organization and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. In addition, Dr. Shulkin held numerous physician leadership roles and also founded and served as the Chairman and CEO of DoctorQuality, one of the first consumer-oriented sources of information for quality and safety in health care.
Dr. Shulkin is a board-certified internist, and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, his internship at Yale University School of Medicine, and a residency and Fellowship in General Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Medical Center. He received advanced training in outcomes research and economics as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania.
