Welcome to the Chemistry and Physical Sciences Department on Pace University’s New York City campus.

Chemistry and Physical Sciences is located in the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences which offers a vibrant environment to pursue an education in the sciences. Chemistry is the central science, it is the foundation for understanding the natural world. Students wishing to enter into the fields of medicine, industry, pharmacy, environmental sciences, or education will benefit from a strong background in chemistry. The chemistry program is certified by the American Chemical Society and provides a unique opportunity to integrate classroom theory with laboratory experience. You will be carried far beyond textbook learning to get hands-on experience with modern laboratory instrumentation. Students have the opportunity to participate in research projects with faculty and present their research at national conferences.

The study of Chemistry develops valuable skills for today is demanding professional environments. Students are trained in handling information that varies from qualitative to graphical and quantitative. In this process they develop problem solving skills, critical thinking, and logical reasoning.

The Chemistry and Biochemistry curricula are designed to educate persons for assuming professional positions in industry, to enroll in graduate schools in chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology and for admission to professional schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering. Our faculty members utilize modern instructional technologies to facilitate student understanding of chemical concepts and their applications. There are several new areas of chemistry developing which offer exciting challenges to graduates in chemistry such as green chemistry and nanochemistry.

Pace University offers a unique environment for students in the Chemistry program. Students can graduate with BS in chemistry or biochemistry with ACS certification, or BS in forensic science. We also offer a MS in forensic science and plan to offer a MS degrees in biochemistry with the opportunity to pursue their research at Cornell Medical School. Students are encouraged to become student ACS members and participate in local and national meetings. The program offers an invigorating and dynamic curriculum that provides the students with the latest techniques and advances in the subject. The higher level courses are taught as small classes by faculty, not teaching assistants, promoting an environment that encourages learning.

We believe that a productive attitude is a critical component of the success in our department. Although students are encouraged to set high standards for themselves, we also try to foster an ambiance for work and study that is informal and emphasizes mutual support. Your contact with the faculty will be relaxed and continuous. We believe that students are as important as faculty in fostering a congenial environment for the best learning outcomes. Our students comprise a lively, international group with interests and talents that range widely within and beyond science.

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to be involved in research projects, which have four major educational goals: 1) Stimulating students interest in chemistry through research projects in contemporary issues; 2) Providing students with the opportunity to apply modern instrumentation in experimental investigations; 3) Fostering collaborative interaction among students; 4) Encouraging students to pursue careers in the discipline of chemistry.

Examples of active research projects include: developing a process that makes fabrics capable of resisting microbes (Dr. Rizzo), developing antimicrobial agents for parasites (Dr. Yarlett), molecular modeling (Dr. Athanasopoulos), synthesis of boron complexes as anticancer agents (Dr. Kabbani), Fluorogenic compounds for use as biomarkers (Dr. Z. Dai), development of fluorescent nanotubes (Dr. Helburn).

Many of the students involved in research projects present their results at national and international conferences and have the opportunity to meet students and researchers from other Universities which often lead to further opportunities after graduation. Students also have the opportunity to publish their work in leading peer refereed journals in the area of their work.

The commitment of the faculty to provide a first class program and the support of the University are key ingredients to the provision of an outstanding education in chemistry.
