Welcome to the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department of Pace University. We are a department that stands in the tradition of Socrates who affirmed that an unexamined life is not worth living. So we examine all of life in terms of the most fundamental and profound issues of what it takes to really be fully human, what is good and evil, the nature of reality, the essence of the beautiful, and claims about the absolute source and end of all existence. We are interested in thinking about our thinking so we can make sense of ourselves and of our world. We study how the great wisdom traditions have sought to integrate the whole of human life. This is a department that discusses the most profound Western and Eastern philosophical and religious ideas, values, and texts that have influenced billions.
Consider receiving a serious preparation for your life and try one of our courses, or seek to minor or major within our disciplines. We offer to students those skills that command instant respect: clear thinking, careful analysis of texts, a sophisticated ability to interrelate important ideas in terms of basic assumptions and solid conclusions, and an empathetic appreciation of the faith and traditions of others. Above all you will find in our department a mind expanding and dramatically enriching opportunity to become the kind of engaged person the world will take seriously and find interesting.
We look forward to meeting you.
