Online Intensive Courses for Au Pairs

ONLINE CLASSES AVAILABLE DURING THE CURRENT CORONA VIRUS/ COVID-19 DISRUPTIONS

The U.S. Department of State will temporarily permit au pairs to enroll in online classes if there are no other options available to them in their community.  Classes must be online version of existing courses.   Pace University is offering only remote learning classes until Sunday, May 31, 2020.  We are committed to offering au pairs opportunities to receive the credits you need. Therefore, the following scheduled classes will be offered online.

2-week Intensive Course Descriptions, Dates and Fees

Flexible learning

The courses will take approximately 10 hours each week to complete. During most of the course, students will participate in activities that can be done individually and on the student's own schedule.  Students may also participate in activities that take place at the same time with other students and instructor through live class sessions.  The live class sessions are not mandatory but meant to enhance the learning experience.

Professional Writing Skills

This course will introduce you to how writing is implemented in the work place. In this course we will go over how to write resumes, reports and professional emails. In addition, we will go over the cultural aspect of the workplace and what is expected out of a professional in the US.

There is an optional additional research assignment/ essay to be completed after the course, to earn an additional 20 hours. You must register for the weekend course in order to register for the research assignment. You cannot register for the research assignment only.

Earn 20 hours for the class+ 20 hours for the optional additional research assignment.

Consumer Behavior & Marketing

Explore the underlying mechanisms that share behavior, linking experimental psychology, sociology, and marketing. Examine and discuss the impact of triggers on consumer choice; social networks as channels of influence; the social influence of convergence and divergence; the consumer decision-making process; why products, ideas, and behaviors become popular; and rules to make ideas stick.

There is an optional additional research assignment/ essay to be completed after the course, to earn an additional 20 hours. You must register for the weekend course in order to register for the research assignment. You cannot register for the research assignment only.

Understanding the U.S. Presidential Election

What are primaries about? How did the president win with 3 million fewer votes? Why does the US only have two viable political parties? What are checks and balances in the US system? How does COVID-19 affect politics in the US? These questions and more will be answered as you take a crash course in what’s happening in the country around you. Whether you want to talk politics with your host family or just want to show off to your friends how much you learned from your time in the US, you’ll learn the structure of the US political system in a fun and engaging way while you analyze it with other au pairs from around the world.​

New Approaches to Digital Marketing & Social Media

Explore social media in new strategic ways by learning how the evolving role of digital marketing and online content is influencing how people connect via the Internet and mobile devices. Through active discussion and group activities, participants will gain further knowledge of building online communities using contemporary social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), engaging and interacting effectively with audiences through video and messaging (e.g. YouTube, Snapchat), and understanding how to use LinkedIn and other professional social platforms to gain recognition and network in a competitive online environment.

Interpersonal Communication

This course examines core interpersonal skills, explores effective communication strategies for building interpersonal relations and working in  teams, and addresses barriers to effective communication. Participants will acquire specific skills that can increase their communication competence: listening effectively, building rapport, inspiring trust, reading body language, speaking up for themselves, providing support and comfort to others; they will also acquire conflict resolution strategies and learn how to overcome barriers to effective communication.  Join us for this interactive and informative course!

Registration

All registration and payment for courses is done online.

If you have already taken a class (Weekend, Evening, Saturday, Weekday, or TOEFL Blast) with us before, you already have a university account. You MUST activate the account before registering for a new course. Please DO NOT create a new account. Please read the Online Registration Instruction including the Account Activation (PDF). Multiple accounts will make it difficult to verify classes you took for your credit hour requirement. If you get "Duplicate Course" message, please call (212) 346-1562 or email the English Language Institute.


Location

All classes will meet online through ZOOM Video Conference or Blackboard.  Students will receive instructions for activating their Pace University student account and how to access Blackboard before the first day of class.  For classes meeting on ZOOM, insructions for accessing your online class will be sent by email before the first day of class.


Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After finishing classes, students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended.


Payment and Tuition Cancellation Policy

Notification of your intent to cancel or withdraw from a course must be submitted by email to the ELI. Depending on the course, you may also be required to submit a "Registration Action Form" to the Office of Student Assistance. If the correct procedure is not followed, you will not receive a refund and you will receive an F for the course at the end of the term.

ID Policies

Students who register only for online courses will not receive a Pace University ID card.  Students who register for a 6/7-week in-person course held on-campus will receive an ID card.  Eligible students will receive information from our Admissions team before classes begin.


Course Completion Policy

Students who have earned a final grade of 60% or higher are considered to have successfully completed a course. Students who successfully complete any course at the English Language Institute are eligible to receive certification for the hours attended. Please read the certificate policy below for certificate eligibility.


Certificate of Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After successfully completing a class (see above course completion policy), students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended. Students who receive a final grade below 60% in any course are considered to have failed the course and are not be eligible for a certificate and will forfeit any hours attended. Certificate will be sent by email within 2 business days of course completion.


Withdrawal Policy

Students who stop attending a class in progress may officially withdraw by sending a message to the English Language Institute eli@pace.edu within 48 hours of the last attended class. Students in good academic standing (class average of 60% or higher) who officially withdraw may receive a certificate confirming actual hours attended. Students who are not in good academic standing at the time of withdrawal or who do not officially withdraw within 48 hours of the last attended class will forfeit any hours attended. An official withdrawal will result in a grade of “W” on University records and academic transcripts. Please see the tuition cancellation policy for refund eligibility.
