Summer II 2020 Course Descriptions

English PLUS Career and Professional Communication Skills

9 hours per week

Learn how to conduct a job search, interviewing skills, telephone skills, how to conduct meetings and negotiations, along with other essential professional skills. Improve your pronunciation and fluency and develop cross-cultural communicative competence. Utilizing storytelling techniques, students will learn how to impress hiring managers. Over three weeks you will learn how to explain skills related to professional experiences, and work with other collaboratively to produce effective individual and group presentations.

This course includes access to an English PLUS Career and Professional Skills Guest Speaker Series. Guest speakers hold online discussions related to careers in various industries and provide advice to professionals on succesful networking techniques and job search strategies.

The minimum English proficiency to be successful in this course is CEFR B1, TOEFL score of 55, or IELTS score of 5.5.

Dates: July 13-31, 2020
Hours/ week: 9 hours
Days and Time: A 2.15-hour live teaching session* will be held on Monday and Wednesday mornings (4.5 hours total of live teaching per week). Students will work independently with instructor support an additional 4.5 hours per week.

English PLUS Career and Professional Writing Skills

9 hours per week

Learn how to write an American-style resume (CV) and cover letter, as well as email writing, creating a LinkedIn profile, writing reports and proposals and important computer terminology. Learn strategies for ensuring your writing is concise in all communications.

This course includes access to an English PLUS Career and Professional Skills Guest Speaker Series. Guest speakers hold online discussions related to careers in various industries and provide advice to professionals on succesful networking techniques and job search strategies.

The minimum English proficiency to be successful in this course is CEFR B1, TOEFL score of 55, or IELTS score of 5.5.

Dates: July 13-31, 2020
Hours/ week: 9 hours
Days and Time: A 2.15-hour live teaching session* will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (4.5 hours total of live teaching per week). Students will work independently with instructor support an additional 4.5 hours per week.

*Live teaching sessions are intended to enhance our online class experience. These sessions are recorded and available through the Blackboard learning platform to allow students in all timezones to attend at a convenient time. There is no penalty for being unable to join a live teaching session in progress.

Registration

All registration and payment for courses is done online.

If you have already taken a class (Weekend, Evening, Saturday, Weekday, or TOEFL Blast) with us before, you already have a university account. You MUST activate the account before registering for a new course. Please DO NOT create a new account. Please read the Online Registration Instruction including the Account Activation (PDF). Multiple accounts will make it difficult to verify classes you took for your credit hour requirement. If you get "Duplicate Course" message, please call (212) 346-1562 or email the English Language Institute.


Location

All classes will meet online through Blackboard. Students will receive instructions for activating their Pace University student account and how to access Blackboard before the first day of class.


Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After finishing classes, students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended.


Payment and Tuition Cancellation Policy

Notification of your intent to cancel or withdraw from a course must be submitted by email to the ELI. Depending on the course, you may also be required to submit a "Registration Action Form" to the Office of Student Assistance. If the correct procedure is not followed, you will not receive a refund and you will receive an F for the course at the end of the term.

ID Policies

Students who register only for online courses will not receive a Pace University ID card. Students who register for a 6/7-week in-person course held on-campus will receive an ID card. Eligible students will receive information from our Admissions team before classes begin.


Course Completion Policy

Students who have earned a final grade of 60% or higher are considered to have successfully completed a course. Students who successfully complete any course at the English Language Institute are eligible to receive certification for the hours attended. Please read the certificate policy below for certificate eligibility.


Certificate of Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After successfully completing a class (see above course completion policy), students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended. Students who receive a final grade below 60% in any course are considered to have failed the course and are not be eligible for a certificate and will forfeit any hours attended. Certificate will be sent by email within 2 business days of course completion.


Withdrawal Policy

Students who stop attending a class in progress may officially withdraw by sending a message to the English Language Institute eli@pace.edu within 48 hours of the last attended class. Students in good academic standing (class average of 60% or higher) who officially withdraw may receive a certificate confirming actual hours attended. Students who are not in good academic standing at the time of withdrawal or who do not officially withdraw within 48 hours of the last attended class will forfeit any hours attended. An official withdrawal will result in a grade of “W” on University records and academic transcripts. Please see the tuition cancellation policy for refund eligibility.
