Online Intensive English Program

Whether you study English to improve your academic success, achieve your career goals, or simply improve your life, ELI's course of study can help. Learn the essentials of grammar and writing; improve listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills; and enhance your vocabulary through reading. With the help of an advisor, you can create your own program of study by choosing from a menu of courses. There are four levels. A placement test is required to join the below courses.

Course Descriptions, Dates And Prices

Grammar And Writing

Learn grammar in the context of your own writing and through controlled exercises from the textbook. Learn how to correct your mistakes and improve your writing by editing and revising your papers.  (Intermediate-Upper Intermediate)

Dates: Summer II 2020 (July 7-August 17, 2020)
Hours/ week: 5 hours/ week
Days and Time: A 2.5 hour live teaching session* will be held on Wednesday mornings.  Students will work independently with instructor support an additional 2.5 hours per week.

Conversation And Listening

Improve conversational fluency and listening comprehension. This class focuses on communicating ideas in English. Audio, video and reading materials are used for conversation topics and for developing listening skills. (Intermediate-Upper Intermediate)

Hours/ week: 5 hours/ week
Days and Time: A 2.5 hour live teaching session* will be held on Monday mornings.  Students will work independently with instructor support an additional 2.5 hours per week.

Reading And Vocabulary

Learn different reading strategies and skills to increase vocabulary and reading comprehension. Read a variety of newspaper and magazine articles, novels and stories, and academic texts to learn how to apply these strategies and skills. (Intermediate-Upper Intermediate)

TOEFL Preparation

Prepare to get a high score on the TOEFL Test. Review test-taking strategies and develop skills for the Listening, Grammar, and Reading sections. (Advanced level)

Advanced Idioms

Increase your English fluency through the mastery of idioms. Practice idioms by using news reports, radio programs, songs, role play exercises, presentations, magazines, and advertisements. (Intermediate-Advanced)

*Live teaching sessions are intended to enhance our online class experience.  These sessions are recorded and available through the Blackboard learning platform to allow students in all timezones to attend at a convenient time.  There is no penalty for being unable to join a live teaching session in progress.

Registration

All registration and payment for courses is done online.

Online Intensive English courses require an online application and an online English placement exam to be completed. After finishing the online English placement exam students will meet with an academic advisor by Zoom to choose their class(es).

Students outside the United States and students who are already in the United States and are not studying as an F-1 Student Visa: Please submit our part-time visitor application online to begin your registration process for the online weekday intensive english courses.

Students with an F-1 Student Visa and are already in the United States: Please submit our Transfer Form I-20 application online to begin your registration process for the online weekday intensive english courses.


Location

All classes will meet online through Blackboard. Students will receive instructions for activating their Pace University student account and how to access Blackboard before the first day of class.


Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After finishing classes, students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended.


Payment and Tuition Cancellation Policy

Notification of your intent to cancel or withdraw from a course must be submitted by email to the ELI. Depending on the course, you may also be required to submit a "Registration Action Form" to the Office of Student Assistance. If the correct procedure is not followed, you will not receive a refund and you will receive an F for the course at the end of the term.

ID Policies

Students who register only for online courses will not receive a Pace University ID card. Students who register for a 6/7-week in-person course held on-campus will receive an ID card. Eligible students will receive information from our Admissions team before classes begin.


Course Completion Policy

Students who have earned a final grade of 60% or higher are considered to have successfully completed a course. Students who successfully complete any course at the English Language Institute are eligible to receive certification for the hours attended. Please read the certificate policy below for certificate eligibility.


Certificate of Attendance Policy

Please note we are a non-credit program. After successfully completing a class (see above course completion policy), students will receive a certificate from Pace that confirms the number of hours they attended during the session. Minimum 85% attendance is required to receive a certificate for the full number of course hours. Any students who attend less than 85% will receive a certificate for the exact number of hours that they attended. Students who receive a final grade below 60% in any course are considered to have failed the course and are not be eligible for a certificate and will forfeit any hours attended. Certificate will be sent by email within 2 business days of course completion.


Withdrawal Policy

Students who stop attending a class in progress may officially withdraw by sending a message to the English Language Institute eli@pace.edu within 48 hours of the last attended class. Students in good academic standing (class average of 60% or higher) who officially withdraw may receive a certificate confirming actual hours attended. Students who are not in good academic standing at the time of withdrawal or who do not officially withdraw within 48 hours of the last attended class will forfeit any hours attended. An official withdrawal will result in a grade of “W” on University records and academic transcripts. Please see the tuition cancellation policy for refund eligibility.
