Preparing for Academic Student Success for Admitted International Students

Academic Culture and Language for International Students in the U.S.A.

An Online Course for Admitted International Students in the United States

Course Description

This four-week online course helps prepare international students academically and culturally before they arrive to study at a college or university in the United States. Conducted entirely online and available from anywhere in the world, the PASS course introduces international students to the academic language, conventions, and standards of American higher education. The course equips international students with the important skills needed in order to be successful in their degree programs.

Course modules focus on making important connections both on and off campus, learning about American academic culture and expectations, using English effectively inside and outside of the classroom, introducing students to numerous on-campus resources and support services, and helping students acclimate to life in the United States.

American Academic Culture

Students will learn about the college community, discuss their programs of study and discover standards and practices in higher education in the United States and what the expectations are for undergraduate and graduate students studying in American universities and colleges.

Effective English

After analyzing their strengths through a detailed needs analysis, students will look at aspects of English essential for academic success in the USA. Aspects of language explored include the differences between formal and informal English and written and spoken English, as well as college-specific terminology. Helpful online grammar and writing tools will be shared.

Life On Campus

Students look at various aspects of typical American college campuses, including ways of accessing academic resources and support, and of building social and professional networks.

Life In The USA

After an introduction to U.S. history and culture, students will explore how to make the most of their study abroad experience and ways of getting to know Americans. A reflective capstone project summarizes key learnings from the course.
