Intensive Courses for Au Pairs

CORONAVIRUS/ COVID-19 UPDATE

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the courses listed below can all be taken online.

Two-day weekend courses and two-week self-paced online courses that have been specially created for au pairs. Get the credits you need for your J1 visa while studying several interesting, helpful and fun topics. Each course is 20 hours (including a pre-course assignment). There is an optional additional research assignment for an additional 20 hours, for a total of 40 hours possible for each weekend course.

2-week Intensive Courses

Courses are fully online and self-paced

The courses will take approximately 10 hours each week to complete. During most of the course, students will participate in activities that can be done individually and on the student's own schedule. Students may also participate in activities that take place at the same time with other students and instructor through live class sessions.

Optional live class sessions with the instructor are also available. These are not mandatory, but are meant to enhance the learning experience. The times for these sessions are arranged by the instructor on the first day of the course.

Multicultural Psychology

** Course offered Online**

This course provides an introduction to the field of cultural psychology, which studies the effects of culture on human psychology. Research has shown that many psychosocial processes are culture-specific rather than universal. This course explores such topics as perception, emotion, motivation, intelligence, personality, gender identity, and psychological disorders from cross-cultural perspectives.

Over two weeks, you will:

  • learn how culture influences our emotional experience and our perception
  • discover how culture influences our parenting style
  • explore issues around conformity and social loafing universal and how they vary across cultures
  • discover how different cultures resolve conflict
  • examine cross—cultural students of happiness, anger, stress, and anxiety

There is an optional additional research assignment/ essay to be completed after the course, to earn an additional 20 hours. You must register for the 2-week intensive course in order to register for the research assignment. You cannot register for the research assignment only.

Earn 20 hours for the class + 20 hours for the optional additional research assignment.

Cross-Cultural Communication in the Workplace

This highly interactive course explores cultural differences in values and norms and their impact on communication in professional settings. Topics include motivation and leadership across cultures, cross-cultural dimensions of decision-making, and negotiating across cultures.

Over two weeks, you will:

  • compare communication patterns around the world
  • examine strategies for successful interaction across cultures
  • discover cultural differences in nonverbal communication

There is an optional additional research assignment/ essay to be completed after the course, to earn an additional 20 hours. You must register for the 2-week intensive course in order to register for the research assignment. You cannot register for the research assignment only.

Digital Marketing and Social Media

** Course offered Online**

Explore social media in new strategic ways by learning how the evolving role of digital marketing and online content is influencing how people connect via the Internet and mobile devices. Classes involve active discussion and group activities.

Over two weeks, you will:

  • gain further knowledge of building online communities using contemporary social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • learn how to engage and interacting effectively with audiences through video and messaging (e.g. YouTube, Snapchat)
  • understand how to use LinkedIn and other professional social platforms to gain recognition and network in a competitive online environment

There is an optional additional research assignment/ essay to be completed after the course, to earn an additional 20 hours. You must register for the 2-week intensive course in order to register for the research assignment. You cannot register for the research assignment only.

Professional Writing Skills

** Course offered Online**

This course will introduce students to how writing is implemented in the work place. In this course we will go over how to write resumes, cover letters, reports, memos, and professional emails. We will work to refine your writing skills in a professional way to help you present yourself as professional and collaborative to potential employers. In addition, we will go over the basic cultural aspect of the workplace and what is expected out of a professional in the U.S.

Over two weeks, you will:

  • write a short online profile detailing professional skills and accomplishments
  • write a basic formal email/letter requesting information
  • compose a professional cover letter and resume outlining/detailing professional education, skills, and accomplishments
  • answer basic questions about professional experiences through writing
  • compose a memo or report with basic information

There is an optional additional research assignment/ essay to be completed after the course, to earn an additional 20 hours. You must register for the 2-week intensive course in order to register for the research assignment. You cannot register for the research assignment only.

Excellence in Education

A career in education might be for you! This twenty-hour program was designed for au pairs who are considering becoming teachers.

Over two weeks, you will:

  • receive an overview of the teaching profession
  • learn the necessary tools that all new teachers should have in their tool belts
  • understand strategies for immediate classroom success
  • practice creating effective lesson plans

Registration

All registration and payment for courses is done online.

If you have already taken a class (Weekend, Evening, Saturday, Weekday, or TOEFL Blast) with us before, you already have a university account. You MUST activate the account before registering for a new course. Please DO NOT create a new account. Please read the Online Registration Instruction including the Account Activation (PDF). Multiple accounts will make it difficult to verify classes you took for your credit hour requirement. If you get "Duplicate Course" message, please call (212) 346-1562 or email the English Language Institute.


Research Assignment

The number of hours stated on the certificate is based on the average number of hours needed to complete the requirements of the assignment. Research assignments are due by the published deadline in the above course information and also as communicated in pre-arrival information sent by our Admissions team. Students may request an extension of up to 3 days by writing the Admissions team before the research assignment due date in writing to eli@pace.edu. Requests for extensions after the research assignment due date will not be honored. Research assignments received after the due date or approved extended due date will not be accepted and the research assignment hours will be forfeited.

Students who registered and attended a weekend intensive course may add-on one (1) 20-hour research assignment for specific course and topic they attended no later than the Friday after the course completed. Requests to add on a 20-hour research paper after the Friday deadline will not be approved.
