Professional and Business Communication in American Culture: 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - Au Pair Price $125 (regular price $195)

he instructor will guide students through a hands-on experience in writing effective professional e-mails, creating their own American-style résumé, participating in mock job interviews, engaging in negotiation meetings, setting up an effective professional social media profile and more. TOEFL Preparation: 1:30-4:00 p.m. - Au Pair Price $125 (regular price $195)

Learn test strategies and review grammar and vocabulary. 

In one 7-week term (7 class meetings), a student can take Integrated Skills course (18 hours) or TOEFL Preparation course (18 hours), or both (36 hours).

TOEFL Preparation - Au Pair price $180 (regular price $245) including Paper-based TOEFL Test ($170 value if you take it elsewhere).  The test will be given after the class on the last day of the course. 20 hours including the test.


Evening ESL Program (New Price from Summer I starting May 11)

Integrated Skills: Monday AND Wednesday 7:00p.m. – 9:30p.m. Au Pair Price $260 (regular price $400)

36 hours including the special assignment*
Improve grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary, and conversation.

In one 7-week term (14 class meetings), a student receives 36 hours including the special assignment*.

Spring II 2016: March 21 – May 4
Summer I 2016: May 11 – June 29
Summer II 2016: July 6 – August 22

Weekend Intensive Program

The course runs from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. The course *requires a four-hour assignment that must be completed before the start of the weekend course. The weekend course costs $200 for 20 hours. There is also an option to write a five-page research essay based on the course for an additional 20 hours. This 40-hour option costs $365. Please note that attendance on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm is mandatory in order to earn hours. No partial credit awarded.

May 7 and 8th: Cross-Cultural Communication - Please indicate these dates on the registration form
Expand your cultural awareness as you explore cultural communication patterns of the US versus those of other countries. Ex-amine ways of life, dominant attitudes, social relations, business practices and patterns of thinking. We will then consider strat-egies for overcoming communication barriers and accomplish communicative goals. Join us for this lively and interactive course.

Option 1 20 Hours Credit - May 7and and 8th,  9am-5pm. $200
Option 2 40 Hours Credit - Weekend +Research Essay combination. Research Essay Due 6/9. $365. For this option students must attend the weekend course and complete a post-course five -page research essay.

May 14th and 15th: American Humor (Full)
What’s so funny? Expand your knowledge of American culture through the study of humor. Learn how humor has changed over the year from slapstick to the romantic comedy to adult humor. We’ll view and discuss humor as it appear in different media such as sitcoms, films, cartoons, and Jokes. Come have a laugh with us!

Option 1 20 Hours Credit - May 14th and 15th 9am-5pm. $200
Option 2 40 Hours Credit - Weekend +Research Essay combination. Research Essay Due 6/14. $365. For this option students must attend the weekend course and complete a post-course five -page research essay.

June  4 and 5: American  Pop Culture
In this course, we'll examine the various  historical forms of pop culture including, music, movies, TV, fashion, sports, and cyber-culture.  Learn about the days when hula hoops, hip-huggers , dreadlocks,  video games, and grunge were all the rage. Explore the origins, lyrics and  themes in rock ‘n’ roll, disco, punk, heavy metal, hip-hop, rap, and techno music. Join us for this rollercoaster ride through the last five decades of American pop culture.
Option 1  20 Hours Credit -  June 4th  and  5th * 9am-5pm  $200 
Option 2  40 Hours Credit - Weekend +Research Essay combination. Research Essay Due 7/5.  $365. For this option  students must attend the weekend course and complete a post-course five -page research  essay.
 
June 11 and 12: Tourism and  Hospitality  in New York (course held in Manhattan!)
Learn what makes NYC  one of the major tourism and hospitality destinations in the world.  Explore what all the boroughs of NYC have to offer.  Learn about the future of tourism and hospitality in the city by using cutting edge technology,  virtual tours, and film in vibrant midtown Manhattan at the historic Fred F. French Building, a classic Art Deco building on 5th Avenue.

June 25 and 26: Education in America: Fact & Fiction Through Film
What was your perception of education in America before you arrived? Have your views changed since you’ve been here? Get a different perspective of on education in the U.S. by watching critically acclaimed films and documentaries about American schools. Look at high school and college life through the eyes of renowned filmmakers. Those of you considering studying at an American college can get the inside scoop on what college education and life are really like. This course is interactive, informative and entertaining!
 
Option 1 20 Hours Credit June  25th and 26th * 9am-5pm  $200
Option 2  40 Hours Credit - Weekend +Research Essay combination. Research Essay Due 7/26.  $365. For this option  students must attend the weekend course and complete a post-course five -page research  essay.

Au Pair TOEFL Blast! Fridays

TOEFL BLAST Fridays Time: 9:30-1pm (7 class meetings/ 24 hours / 2 au pair credits)

This course prepares you to reach iBT and paper-based TOEFL score goals by teaching every aspect of the test including grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking and test strategies. More than 9,000 universities and colleges in over 130 countries accept or require a TOEFL score.
Many employers require a TOEFL score as a requisite for employment. Don’t miss this opportunity to boost your resume or CV. At the end of the course, students will take the TOEFL ITP (paper based) exam, which costs $170 to take elsewhere. The test will be administered on the last day of the class at 11:00am.

Deeply Discounted Weekday Morning Intensive English Language Courses (New Price from Summer II starting July 11)

Registration

Students are required to register prior to the first class meeting. For insurance reasons, students who are not registered are not allowed to sit in a classroom. Please note we cannot accept the registration and the payment via email.

  • Saturday and Evening Students: Please submit the Registration form, Payment/Refund Policies, and the payment to the ELI office to reserve your spot. You can mail them to our office. Without your registration and the payment, we will not be able to hold a spot for you. Please pay with a check or money order payable to Pace University. Please write your name on the memo section so that we can identify whose check it is for. If you use a money order, please bring it with you to our office or mail it with a tracking number for your own security.  ELI cannot be responsible for money orders lost in the mail.
  • Weekday Morning Intensive Program Students: Please submit the Registration form, Payment/Refund Policies and a check payment payable to Pace University prior to or on the day of the Placement Test to ELI office. For continuing students, there is no need for you to take the placement test again. Please send the registration paper and the payment as soon as you can to reserve your spot. Academic Policies for Au Pair Students to Earn Hours

Saturday Program, Evening Program, and Intensive English Program

  • ATTENDANCE - Students must attend all class meetings including weather-related make-ups. Please inform your instructor or the ELI Office if you must miss a class. Students may miss a maximum of 2 class meetings in the Intensive and Evening Programs, and a maximum of 1 class meeting in the Saturday Program. After the second missed class meeting for the Intensive and Evening Programs, and after the first missed class meeting in the Saturday Program, student must submit a makeup assignment. If any additional class meeting is missed, you will only receive credit for the number of hours actually attended.
  • ELECTRONIC DEVICES - Your instructor will establish rules for using electronic devices such as computers and cell phones in class. You are required to follow these rules.

Weekday Intensive Students and TOEFL Blast Fridays Students only: Please fill out the Application for Car Registration, and bring it to the placement test (Weekday Intensive students only) or the first day of your class. After the submission of registration/payment, to the ELI Office, you can take the car application to the Office of Student Aid / the Bursar on the first floor of Aloysia Hall to get a parking tag.
