Microsoft recently announced that they are rebranding the MS Lync 2013 product as “Skype for Business” and this change will include an updated user interface (UI). For more details and to see screenshots of the new look, check out the Hands On Review of Skype for Business Client. Server-side changes are also planned for the near future.
ITS is currently reviewing and testing the Skype for Business update and plans to release it to all Pace computers starting on Tuesday, May 12th, 2015. However, please note that some computers may have already received the Skype for Business update as part of another update pushed out by Microsoft. No further action is required for those users.
What does this mean for Lync 2010 Users?
Users with the Lync 2010 client will not receive the Skype for Business update and their Lync functionality will remain the same. However, users are encouraged to upgrade to Lync 2013 by downloading Office 2013 to take advantage of the updated Skype for Business UI, as well as new Lync features and functionality. For more information on Microsoft Lync and the upgrade to 2013, please go to the Microsoft Lync page.
