On May 15 and 16, the 13th annual Faculty Institute returns to the Westchester Campus to promote teaching excellence and collaboration.
On May 15 and 16, the 13th annual Faculty Institute returns to the Westchester Campus to promote teaching excellence and collaboration. The planning committee invites and encourages faculty participation in this year’s “Un”-Institute with this call for session proposals.
The Faculty Institute addresses current practices of teaching and learning. But this year we are asking ourselves if we can “unlearn” in order to empower our teaching. We will look at such areas as assessment, teaching methodologies, pedagogical tools, and strategies for differentiating our instruction to reach an array of learners. What can be “undone” to enhance our teaching as well as the students’ learning experience? New for this year’s Faculty Institute are 90-minute workshops facilitated by your colleagues. These workshops will be active sessions for you to work on a teaching method and to experience some different teaching techniques. Workshop topics are:
- Unlearning Assessment
- Unmasking the Talking Head
- Unbundling your Syllabus
- Unstructuring the Classroom
- Unlocking Feedback
- Unteaching to the Middle
On day two of the conference Pace faculty will hear from Ken Bain, PhD, author of two bestsellers–What the Best College Teachers Do and What the Best College Students Do. Bain is the President of the Best Teachers Institute. He spent much of his academic career at Vanderbilt University, Northwestern University, and New York University, before becoming Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of History and Urban Education at the University of the District of Columbia. His interactive “Un-Keynote” session will address the type of teacher who helps students construct knowledge and broaden their ability for deep learning.
