Artist Talks: March 2021

This month, abstract artists will be opening up about their work in a brand new exhibit and discussion series featuring their work creating meaning through material, rather than representational imagery.

Join the Pace University Art Gallery for their latest exhibit series titled “Substance,” which will feature five abstract artists who create meaning through material rather than representational imagery. The project includes talks, a digital exhibit, and an on-campus residency beginning Monday, March 1—not to mention the in-person exhibit in Fall 2021. Join them for this special opportunity!

Diego Anaya
Monday, March 1 | 6:30 p.m. | Attend the talk with Diego Anaya

Diego’s work is minimalist in imagery, yet he celebrates his Mexican heritage through the use of ground corn, corn ash, and sand with which he creates rough and uneven surfaces. The texture compels the viewer to examine the work closely and even to want to touch and smell the granular surface, creating an immediate and intimate connection between the viewer and the artist.

Alberto Lule
Wednesday, March 10 | 3:00 p.m. | Attend the talk with Alberto Lule

Alberto critiques and exposes the prison industrial complex in America as a form of modern slavery. His investigation series offers insight to his experience as a formerly incarcerated person by using fingerprint powder—a tool used by police to prove someone was at the scene of a crime—as his drawing material. Thereby, Alberto reclaims his past, present, and future, stating that he isn’t at the mercy of the corrupt American prison system any longer.

Liz Atz
Tuesday, March 16 | 6:30 p.m. | Attend the talk with Liz Atz

Through Friday, March 19, the Pace Art Gallery will host a residency by Liz during which she will create a large-scale window installation on-site. Made of mushroom-based plastics she casts herself, Liz’s bright, immersive installations critique commercialism, materialism, and consumption. During the residency, Liz will experiment further with chitosan—by casting, adding pigment, and laser cutting. The entire Pace Community is invited to drop in to see the process! Come by Tuesday through Thursday from 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. via the window installation at 41 Park Row. She will also be giving a Zoom talk.
