Black History Month 2018
This February, the PLV and NYC campuses will be visited by two seminal speakers in honor of Black History Month: Yusef Salaam and Marc Lamont Hill, PhD.
18th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration featuring Yusef Salaam
Friday, February 9 | 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. | Willcox Hall, Multi-Purpose Room
On April 19, 1989, a young woman in the prime of her life was brutally raped and left for dead in New York City’s Central Park. The woman was dubbed the “Central Park jogger” and the accused teens became known collectively as the “Central Park Five.” One of those boys, Yusef Salaam, was just 15 years old when his life was upended and changed forever.
As an exonerated African American man and an influential transformational speaker, Salaam has traveled all around the United States and the Caribbean to deliver powerful lectures and facilitate insightful conversations as he continues to touch lives and raise important questions about race and class, the failings of our criminal justice system, legal protections for vulnerable juveniles, and basic human rights.
Please RSVP to attend this event by emailing the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs.
Dr. Martin Luther King Lecture and Reception featuring Marc Lamont Hill, PhD
Tuesday, February 27 | 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. | Schimmel Center
Scholar, journalist, activist, author, and one of the most gifted intellectuals of our time Marc Lamont Hill, PhD, will examine the historical legacy of racism in America, including seven decades of Jim Crow and its contemporary consequences that include Trayvon Martin, Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland, and many others. Continuing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Hill's talk highlights and encourages us to join the ever-growing generation of activists across the US prepared to organize and act against a mushrooming backdrop of state-sanctioned violences, as well as social and economic injustices. Hill was the host of the syndicated television show Our World with Black Enterprise, hosts HuffPost Live, is a BET News correspondent, and a CNN political commentator. Further, he hosts VH1 Live! and reunion shows for Basketball Wives. In 2016, he released his book Nobody: Causalities of America’s War on the Vulnerable, from Ferguson to Flint and Beyond.
