New York Undergraduate Commencement:
Wednesday, May 20 at 10:30 a.m.

Charles Phillips, Chief Executive Officer, Infor®
Degree: Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD)

This year’s honorary degree recipient and speaker for Pace’s New York City undergraduate commencement ceremony is Charles Phillips, the Chief Executive Officer of Infor®, the world’s third largest provider of enterprise software applications. Infor builds industry-specific software for manufacturing, healthcare, fashion, and public sector organizations, among others.

Prior to Infor, Phillips was President of Oracle® Corporation and a member of its Board of Directors. The company tripled in size during his tenure. Prior to Oracle, Phillips was a Managing Director in the Technology Group at Morgan Stanley®. Before his 18-year career on Wall Street, Phillips was a Captain in the US Marine Corps in the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines artillery unit.

Phillips holds a BS in computer science from the US Air Force Academy, a JD from New York Law School, and an MBA from Hampton University. He is also a member of the Georgia State Bar. Phillips serves on the Boards of Viacom® Corporation, Apollo Theater, BENS (Business Executives For National Security), CodeNow, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York Law School, Partnership for New York City, Posse Foundation, United States Air Force Academy Endowment Fund, and his family foundation, Phillips Charitable Organization.

Graduate Commencement:

Charles C. Krulak, General, US Marine Corps (Retired), 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps, and President, Birmingham-Southern College
Degree: Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD)

Pace’s graduate commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient will be General Charles C. Krulak, who served 35 years in the US Marine Corps. His last position was as Commandant of the Marine Corps and as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During his military service, General Krulak was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star Medal, three Bronze Star medals with Combat “V,” two Purple Heart medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, the French Legion d’Honneur Commandeur rank, and many other decorations and medals.

Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, General Krulak joined MBNA America Bank as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MBNA Europe Bank, Ltd., and  then as Vice Chairman, MBNA America Bank as Head of Corporate Development, Mergers and Acquisitions. General Krulak retired from MBNA in June 2005. General Krulak became the 13th President of Birmingham-Southern College in spring 2011.

General Krulak currently sits on the Board of Directors of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Corporation and on the Board of Directors of Union Pacific Railroad Corporation. He sits on the Board of the CEO Forum and serves a Director with Aston Villa Football Club in the United Kingdom. He is an adviser to the Center for Naval Analysis and Human Rights First. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. General Krulak is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and has a master’s degree in labor relations from George Washington University. He and his wife of 50 years, Zandi, have two sons and five grandchildren.

Preet Bharara, United States Attorney, Southern District of New York
Degree: Doctor of Laws (LLD)

President Barack Obama nominated Preet Bharara to become the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Bharara’s nomination was unanimously confirmed by the US Senate and he was sworn in on August 13, 2009.

As US Attorney, Bharara oversees the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the United States in the Southern District of New York. He supervises an office of more than 200 Assistant US Attorneys, who handle a high volume of cases that include domestic and international terrorism, narcotics and arms trafficking, financial and healthcare fraud, public corruption, gang violence, organized crime, cybercrime, and civil rights violations.

Prior to becoming the US Attorney, Bharara served as Chief Counsel and Staff Director of the US Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Administrative Oversight and the Courts. From 2000 to 2005, Bharara served as an Assistant US Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he prosecuted a wide range of cases involving organized crime, racketeering, securities fraud, money laundering, narcotics trafficking, and other crimes. Bharara was a litigation associate in New York at Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman from 1996 to 2000 and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher from 1993 to 1996. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with an AB in Government in 1990, and from Columbia Law School with a JD in 1993, where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review.

Barry Klarberg ’81, ’85, Founder and CEO of Monarch Business and Wealth Management
Degree:  Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD)

Klarberg is Founder and CEO of Monarch Business and Wealth Management, a financial services firm specializing in wealth management for leading sports and entertainment clients. Klarberg is also a limited partner of the New York Yankees and a member of Memphis Basketball, LLC, the group that owns the Memphis Grizzlies professional basketball team. Klarberg also has an ownership stake in New York City FC, the Major League Soccer team that will make its debut in 2015. He was previously a senior managing director with Guggenheim Partners.

Klarberg is the author of the book Winning Tax Strategies and Planning for Athletes and Entertainers. He earned an undergraduate degree from Pace University’s Lubin School of Business in 1981 and an MS in Taxation from the Lubin School in 1985.
