Crisis in the Profession (WP)
Stanford Professor Deborah L. Rhode discusses the legal structure process that places stress on lawyers at Pace Law School’s Blank Lecture on December 3.
Professor Deborah L. Rhode will deliver the 23rd annual 2013 Phillip B. Blank Memorial Lecture on Attorney Ethics at Pace Law School on Tuesday, December 3, at 5:00 p.m.
The Ernest W. McFarland Professor of Law, the director of the Center on the Legal Profession, and the director of the Program in Law and Social Entrepreneurship at Stanford University, Professor Rhode has written more than 20 books including Women and Leadership: The State of Play and Strategies for Change and Moral Leadership: The Theory and Practice of Power, Judgment, and Policy.
Professor Rhode’s lecture, Crisis in the Profession, will address recent changes in the structure of legal practice that place stress on the lives of lawyers and some of the causes and consequences of recent increases in the competitiveness of practice, the decline in jobs, and the escalation of billable hours, and will discuss strategies for change.
“In the current legal marketplace, competition and commercialization are on the rise, while civility and collegiality appear headed in the opposite direction,” said Professor Rhode, speaking of her upcoming lecture. “Lawyers, both individually and collectively, need to develop more constructive responses.”
The lecture will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room of the Gerber Glass Law Library on the Pace Law School campus. A reception will follow immediately after.
RSVP to Brenda Thornton at firstname.lastname@example.org or (914) 422-4123.
Pace Law School’s annual Blank Lecture was established to honor Philip B. Blank and his commitment to legal ethics. Dean Blank served as Associate Dean for External Affairs and Professor of Law at Pace Law School from 1979 until his death in 1989.
